Hello and welcome to the Stanford Women in Business second newsletter!
By now - midway through the quarter - everyone has more or less settledinto busy schedules of classes and activities. We first want to thankeveryone who took some time out of their day to attend our first (ofmany) major all-campus event: the October 12 Power Panel featuringfemale executives from Intel, Microsoft, and TiVo. The encouraging andenthusiastic panelists offered valuable insight into developingrelationships as a business manager and maintaining a work/life balance as a businesswoman.
Over the past 2 weeks we have inducted 5 new SWIB Leadership Internsand made selections into our mentorship program. If you would stilllike to get involved, we're currently looking for marketing "dormliaisons". All interested, please e-mail Vivian Chau at vchau@stanford.edu if you are interested with your name and dorm. We appreciate allthe applications that have been coming in and are continually impressedwith the level of excitement and commitment coming from SWIB members.
Just to keep you updated with our ideas in the works: we are alwaystrying to think of new "community" activities in which we can involveall of the SWIB members together. Future plans include more socialevents and some "business" team building activities.
Quick reminder: don't miss our Business101 Consulting Case Interviewworkshop "Ace the Case" this Thursday at Roble theater!
As always, please e-mail us with any suggestions you may have for SWIBevents or any questions/comments/concerns to

Stanford Women in Business turned out to hear from successful female leaders

Tami Reller (a Microsoft Corporate VP), Sally Reiss (TiVo co-founder), and Patty Murray (an Intel VP) talk about balancing work, kids, exercise, and fun, women's unique skills and challenges in business life, and reinventing their careers. Attendees were told that despite discrimination, progress is being made for women in the boardroom.
Audience members also learned that in order to succeed, women must listen to those around them, quit agonizing over their mistakes, and most importantly, stop fearing failure. For more detailed information about the issues discussed, please see the Daily article below:

Mentorship Corner
The directors of mentorship would like to thank everyone who applied for a
GSB mentor. Please, do not get discouraged if you were not admitted
to the program; the process was more competitive than we expected, and we
made
many difficult decisions. Although we may have been unable to pair you with an individual mentor, all applicants are welcome to attend the Mentor Mochas event in mid-November. Additionally, we are currently working to increase our resources and to expand the mentorship opportunities available to all of our members, and we encourage everyone to continue participating in open SWIB mentorship events.
For admitted applicants, our first Comprehensive Program event will be a kick-off dinner, tentatively scheduled for the week of October 30th. This is the time to meet your assigned mentor, ask any first questions you may have, and make a time to meet them again on a more informal basis before the quarter is over to discuss progress on internships, resumes, cover letters, etc.
Again, many thanks to all of our applicants. We hope to see you at all of
our events throughout the quarter.
