Halloween Philanthropy Events

During the last week of October, SWIB kicked off its philanthropy efforts with two fun-filled, Halloween-themed events. The first was held at HomeSafe San Jose, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, and the second took place at the San Jose Family Shelter for homeless families. SWIB-ers had a blast celebrating Halloween with the kids, helping them decorate mini pumpkins, create personalized trick-or-treating bags, and get their faces painted (in some cases, they were the ones painting our faces!). We hope to see you at future philanthropy events, so stay tuned!

11/9-10: SWIB Retreat

In celebration of SWIB’s new Associate class of 2007-2008, we invited these twenty outstanding ladies to join the leadership board on our first-ever retreat. Special thanks to our presidents Ooshma and Anjali who organized the retreat. Our night started off with a long surprise – a Hummer Limo picked us up and sent us for dinner at a hip restaurant named “Fahrenheit” in downtown San Jose. After dinner, the limo took us to a lovely beach house in Santa Cruz that overlooked the boardwalk. The retreat was a memorable night for all of us and upon returning to campus the next morning, we knew each other a little better and were ready to kickoff a strong year together.

11/13: Business Bites with Dana Nguyen `07 (Co-founder of Stanford Women in Business)

We were all glad to have Dana back as our first SWIB Business Bytes speaker of the year. Dana is our former president who helped SWIB grow from a newly established club into a Dean's award-winning student group last year. She graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering and is now a Marketing Associate at Google.

Dana spoke to our ladies about the challenges of transitioning from Stanford to the workplace. She told us about work at Google, what her responsibilities were as a new-graduate and how the dynamics were like at the professional workplace. She also shared with us her own reflection back on Stanford, what she got out of her academics, of opportunities beyond the classroom and of course, what SWIB meant to her.

Dana was an engaging speaker, and from her talk, we gained insight into what to expect and how to prepare for life after Stanford. This made us re-evaluate our goals and rethink how we can achieve those goals by taking advantage of the opportunities available through Stanford and SWIB.

Pre-Finals Week: Associate Package Pick-up Day

It was the midst of finals week, yet busy and stressed as we all were, the board put together a special package for the loved associates. The bags consisted of holiday goodies, SWIB coffee mugs and an Associate Handbook. We called in our Associates at 6pm when it was cold and dark, and one by one, they came in to pick up their holiday bags, welcoming the warm SWIB surprise as we wished each other “good lucks” on the rest of our exams and “happy holidays” for the long awaited winter break.

1/16 and 1/17: JP Morgan and Lehman Bros Luncheons

Kicking off the recruiting seasion, the luncheon with JP Morgan on January 16 and with Lehman Bros on January 17 allowed SWIB members to network with current executives in each company before their respective info sessions in the evening. Attendees were seated at small tables and enjoyed small group discussions with company representatives over delicious food.

1/27: SWIB Interns: ROLLOUT

We welcomed our first year of SWIB Interns who work under each of the VPs and Directors to gain invaluable leadership experience through planning and organizing various SWIB events. They were also properly rolled out on the morning of January 27th. :)

1/27: Mini-MBA - Interview Preparation Workshop

Led by current SWIB co-presidents Anjali Vaidya and Ooshma Garg, the mini-MBA workshop proved to be a popular and useful event in light of the upcoming recruiting interviews season.

1/28: SWIB Etiquette Workshop

Appropriate titled "What They Don't Teach You at Business School", our Etiquette Workshop was an eye-opening primer on how to properly conduct oneself in business settings. On Monday evening, January 28, 2008, Alicia Warwick met with Stanford Women in Business members to discuss the importance of etiquette in business. Ms. Warwick discussed how to make a formal introduction, how to manage pre-employment business communications, how to behave at a cocktail hour, and how to eat at a formal setting. Ms. Warwick, a graduate of Harvard College and former pole vaulter, was an excellent lecturer.

Ms. Warwick commenced her career as an investment bank analyst in Manhattan; however, she, too, was once a Stanford alum (she also was educated at Harvard). Thus, she was able to really speak to our ladies' concerns! Ms. Warlick is most likely the first SWIB speaker who has appeared in a gossip magazine, due to her affiliations with Prince Albert of Monoco. Check it out!!!

2/25: Stanford Fund Letter Workshop

SWIB got together to secure funding for Spring Quarter. A big thanks to our interns for writing template letters and to all the girls that rolled out to support our group and this funding initiative. We couldn't have done it without you!

3/5: Mentor Mocha

Mentor Mocha was a kick-off event for SWIB's annual Mentorship Program. We selected a great class of mentors and mentees who met over coffee and desserts at the WCC to discuss future goals and career plans.

3/7: Mini-MBA: Post-Recruitment Study Break

An event for SWIB to come together in a casual setting - one that fosters community and friendship. The study break included lots of food and advice!

3/8: SWIB Executive Board Dinner

This was a chance to look back on Winter Quarter and revaluate our goals for the rest of the year. We have a wonderful spring quarter planned for the entire SWIB community. Get excited!

3/9: Mini-MBA Accounting with Assistant Professor Anne Beyer of the Stanford Graduate School of Business

"Anne Beyer’s research interest is in the area of financial accounting with a focus on corporate disclosure, capital market prices, and corporate governance. Recent work has examined the properties of analyst and management earnings forecasts as well as investors’ reaction to different kinds of corporate disclosures.

Anne Beyer joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business as an Assistant Professor in the summer of 2006. She teaches the introductory class in financial accounting.

Anne’s research focuses on corporate disclosure, information economics and corporate governance. Her recent work examines the properties of financial analysts’ and management’s earnings forecasts, as well as investors’ reaction to earnings forecasts and other forms of corporate disclosures. This work includes studying managers’ and analysts’ incentives to bias forecasts and investors’ inferences about firms’ performance based on earnings forecasts.

Native to Germany, Anne attended the University of Stuttgart and the University of Wales, Swansea, prior to moving to the U.S. for her doctoral studies. She received her PhD in Accounting from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Anne maintains a love for the outdoors, running, and travel."
