Spotlight On SWE!

December 3rd, 2011 by alyson

Every few weeks, we will be highlighting a member of the SWE community through our Spotlight On Series. This week, we are kicking off the series with Shaheen Jeeawoody, SWE’s High School Outreach Chair.

Shaheen Jeeawoody

Her Role at SWE: High School Outreach Chair

Year and Major: Class of 2014, BioEngineering with a minor in CS

Hometown: San Jose, California

Favorite Class at Stanford: StemRes83Q (The Stem Cell: Biological, Social, and Practical Aspects of Stem Cell Research), where we converted stem cells into beating heart cells in 7 weeks

Interesting Fact: I’m triracial (Indian, Chinese, and black) but have been mistaken for Latina and Filipina far too often.

What Shaheen Does: I organize the yearly, one-day TSA Teams Day competition (formerly JETS Day), where teams of 4-8 high school students compete for local and national awards on engineering. This year’s theme is Engineering Health.

Who Is Involved: Caroline Abbott (High School Outreach Co-Chair), Elena Frey (High School Outreach Intern), various SWE officers and members, Technology Studet Association (TSA).

Impact That HS Outreach Hopes to Have: We hope to encourage high school students to pursue engineering degrees in their future university studies, exploring areas of interest to them and using research and book learning to understand and manipulate the world around them. Additionally, we hope to encourage students to build their connections with Stanford engineers (especially women and underrepresented minorities) and faculty with the faculty lecture attached to this competition.

It has been an awesome year!

June 1st, 2011 by nina

Hey SWEeties!

Thank you all for a fantastic year! It was an honor serving as your President this year. I hope all of you had as great of an experience as I did with SWE this year. I will cherish the 4 years that I spent with SWE for a very long time. I have learned so much from all you amazing SWEeties, and for that, I will be forever grateful.

I knew that I would always be in great company in SWE, but I never imagined how much fun I would have working with all the officers and interns this year. We had one phenomenal crew and I think it really showed. I know all of our members appreciate the hard work and long hours that were put in to each and every one of our activities. We also could not have pulled off so many successful events without the guidance of our wonderful faculty advisors, Professor Beth Pruitt and Dr. Noe Lozano.

I would also like to recognize our very loyal membership base. Thank you for supporting SWE. I really enjoyed seeing all of your faces at our meetings and events. I hope that we have serve you well and that you will continue to be involved in the great community that SWE hopes to provide. It is with your continued support that we are able to be one of the most reputable and highly esteemed groups on campus.

I have no doubt that SWE will continue growing and doing great things. It is with great pleasure that I welcome the officers for the 2011-2012 school year.

Thank you again for all the memories :D

Signing off,

Nina Wong

Message from the President:

January 10th, 2011 by nina

Hope you all had a restful winter break and are ready for a new quarter of SWE! To recap some of our successful events from fall quarter:
Tabling at the Activities Fair: Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our officers and veteran members, we were able to introduce many new members to SWE in September!
Intern Rollouts: We welcomed 16 unsuspecting interns to the SWE family with early morning rollouts in October! Our interns play a major role in helping us organize all of our events, and we are so grateful for all of their hard work and dedication.
Evening with Industry: Thank you to everyone who came out to support Evening with Industry this year. It was a great success. Great engineering companies and long time supporters of Stanford SWE had dinner and networked with our members and other engineering students at the new Huang Engineering Center in November.
National Conference: Some of our members were able to attend the SWE National Conference in Orlando, Florida in November. They attended many inspiring workshops, networking events, and a career fair with SWE members from universities across the nation. Most importantly, National Conference always proves to be a great opportunity for our members to connect with engineers from all over the world.

Our officer core and interns have planned another great quarter of SWE for you! Check out what is happening this quarter at SWE:
Continuation of Speaker Series Program: Last quarter, we had a record attendance at our lunch meetings. Thank you to all of our members for taking the time out of your busy schedules to participate in this weekly program. Please be sure to put us on your calendars this quarter, as we have an awesome line up planned!
Opportunity Job Fair: At the largest career fair of its kind, students will have the opportunity to connect with over 200 companies for possible internship and job opportunities. SWE members are invited to attend an OJF reception the night before OJF to get a head-start on networking with companies and thanking representatives for attending and for their support of SWE and other engineering diversity societies. Representatives love meeting SWE members and the more intimate reception will allow for you to make a great first impression!
Faculty Lunches: Uncertain what you want to major in or how to become involved in research? No problem. We will bring professors from different engineering departments to SWE to talk to you. Professors take time out of their busy schedules to attend our faculty lunches because they really care about you and want to guide you to the right major for you! To keep these lunches personal, there will be limited attendance, so please be sure to sign up once the announcement goes out (Questions? Contact Kristin at linkm@stanford.edu).
