I am very pleased to announce that we have purchased the RSC eBook Collection. Swain’s endowed funds (David M. Mason, Ethel G. & Albert H. Reinert, and R. Arthur & Juliette Tiernan), cash donations to Swain (including one from Stanford Chemistry Professor Steven G. Boxer), as well as supplemental funding from the Provost to the Stanford University Libraries for buying e-books enabled Swain to purchase this collection of core resources.

The RSC eBook Collection that contains the full-text of over 800 books spanning 40 years of high-quality, chemical science books. Continually updated, this eBook Collection is fully searchable and indexed to chapter level, with all documents provided as PDFs. Excellent search engines, powered by Google, enable you to quickly retrieve the data you want. Please note that our license agreement allows users to download a small portion of a book (e.g. a chapter), but not an entire book. Access is not available yet through our library catalog so you must go to RSC’s web site in order to discover and view items of interest.

Chapter 1 — Writing a Scientific Paper (2nd Edition)
This chapter is a general guide to writing a scientific paper. Specific guidelines for text length, preparation of figures and tables, and instructions on how to submit your paper differ from journal to journal and publisher to publisher.

Chapter 14 — References (3rd Edition)
This chapter presents style conventions for citing references within a manuscript and for listing complete reference citations. Many of the references in the examples were created to illustrate a style point under discussion; they may not be real references.

Magnetic Resonance Online Texts

This well-organized and very thorough website was developed by the physicist Stanislav Sykora with the aim of providing free online texts, theses, and course materials on the subjects of magnetic resonance (MR), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear-magnetic resonance (NMR) and other related topics. The amount of material on the site is impressive. At the top of the page are links to an “MR Blog”, as well as to “MR Links” and the “Site Plan & SEARCH”. The NMR/MRI Extras section on the right side of the page is particularly useful for visitors interested in all things about MR. Its links to “Events” provides an up-to-date list of symposia, conferences, and meetings, along with links to the events’ sites. The “Societies” link offers at least 50 groups about MR, some of which are country-based, and others that are region- or application-based. [KMG]

Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age

New, Important – Read Online Version for Free!

Publishers Description:
As digital technologies are expanding the power and reach of research, they are also raising complex issues. These include complications in ensuring the validity of research data; standards that do not keep pace with the high rate of innovation; restrictions on data sharing that reduce the ability of researchers to verify results and build on previous research; and huge increases in the amount of data being generated, creating severe challenges in preserving that data for long-term use.

Glossary of Terms Used in Biomolecular Screening

Provisional Recommendations
Comments by 30 September 2009

Biomolecular Screening is now a crucial component of the drug discovery process and this Glossary of Terms will be of use to practitioners in the field of screening and to those who interact with the screening community. The glossary contains definitions related to various aspects of the screening process such as assay types, data handling and relevant technologies. Many of the terms used in this discipline are not covered by existing glossaries, and in the cases they are, the definitions are often not appropriate for this field. This document provides new or modified definitions to better reflect the new context. The field of Biomolecular Screening is multidisciplinary in nature and this glossary containing authoritative definitions will be useful not only for regular practitioners, but also for those who make use of the data generated during the screening process.

Publishers Allow More Than Authors Think

Friday, June 5th, 2009

“Publishers’ agreements are more liberal than journal authors think, but do not allow self-archiving of the published PDF.

The Publishing Research Consortium has published another in its series of reports: Journal Authors’ Rights: perception and reality (Summary Paper 5).

Using re-analysis of the recently published ALPSP report Scholarly Publishing Practice 3 (which looks at the practice of 181 publishers, representing 75% of all articles), and a new survey of 1163 authors, the report compares what publishers actually allow authors to do with the different versions of their manuscript, and what they want to do and believe they are permitted to do.
