OPPIE and FlashPoint via LANL: Access Ends 31 August 2009

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

My apologies for the 11th hour notification, but access to OPPIE and FlashPoint from LANL will end on August 31, 2009.

The OPPIE platform has enabled users to search Biosis, Engineering Index, Inspec, and the three citation databases SciSearch, Social SciSearch, and Arts & Humanities. FlashPoint searched the databases on OPPIE plus MathSciNet and PubMet.

Access is ending from developments both at Stanford and at LANL.

Must Now Pickup License Keys in Person for Chem/ChemE Software/Search Clients

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Due to an increase in SUNet IDs being stolen and then used to gain illegal access to library resources and software licensed by Swain, it has become necessary to require users to physically come into the Swain Library and show their Stanford ID in order to get a code or license key. Products affected include:

  • ACD Spectral/Physical Properties Software
  • Beilstein Crossfire
  • Cambridge Structural Database
  • DIADEM/DIPPR 801 Database

Exceptions:

  • PyMOL only uses IP address to authenticate users.
  • SciFinder Scholar site.prf files are available on the server when you download the client software.

We also ask that you do not redistribute passwords or license keys to others.

Disclosure of Borrower Information

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Circulation records are confidential. However when one patron has an item checked out, the needs of another patron can often be met by a brief check of a quotation, citation, etc. in that item. In this case, the borrower’s name, telephone number and/or electronic mail address will be disclosed to any member of the Stanford University community and/or to University of California faculty, academic staff, or graduate student members of the Research Libraries Cooperative Program of the Reciprocal Services Program, unless the borrower has on file, with the Privileges Offices, a signed request for non-disclosure.

Unauthorized Access to SciFinder and Other Digital Resources

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Unauthorized access to SciFinder Scholar and other licensed resources has increased substantially in recent months at U.S. universities, including Stanford.

Compromised SUNet IDs and proxy servers appear to be the primary routes being used for illegally accessing licensed content.

  • Users are strongly encouraged to change their password regularly (at least once every three months) to limit possible abuse of passwords that may have been compromised without the user’s knowledge. Passwords should be chosen so that they are not easily guessable; e.g., not be based on the user’s name or birth date.
  • If you have set up proxy access to your computer, please make sure that access to it is secure.

As you may know, it was possible to search SciFinder Scholar via CDSERVER. This afternoon I had SciFinder removed from the list of resources available on CDSERVER to help address unauthorized access. The MDL Crossfire Commander client software was also removed from CDSERVER (due to licensing language that prohibits the software from being networked). Both SciFinder and Crossfire are available on- and off-campus through web interfaces.

    Please see: Swain’s Databases page

Thank you very much for your support and efforts to help keep digital resources licensed by the Stanford Libraries available to the campus community. When access to resources becomes compromised, providers may block access to an individual or the entire campus and sometimes it takes weeks before access is restored.

Please feel free to contact the librarian if you have any questions or would like to discuss further.

Invitation for Younger Chemists to Participate in a Focus Group

Three focus groups will be held at the Swain Library next Monday, March 9th, at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm.  Each session will last an hour and snacks will be provided. Please let me know by noon Friday (3/6) if you are interested in attending a session. Dave Martinsen who works in Strategic Planning and Analysis in ACS Publications will be leading these sessions.

ACS is investigating emerging technologies on the Internet and their potential applications in the journal publication and delivery environment. As part of this study, ACS is looking at the strategies that younger chemists employ when navigating and using chemical literature on the Web, as well as other technologies they are using to carry out their scientific research.

Many thanks for considering this request.  I hope that some of you have time to attend.

ACS Introduces “Just Accepted” Manuscripts, a New Pilot Program

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Text below is from ACS LiveWire Vol. 10, Issue 2: February 2009

As a service to the scientific research community and in keeping with our commitment to the rapid dissemination of scientific information, ACS Publications has introduced a pilot program in which authors publishing in four select journals may choose to publish “Just Accepted” manuscripts within 3 days of acceptance.

Authors publishing new research in ACS Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Journal of Proteome Research, and Molecular Pharmaceutics may elect to have their accepted, unredacted manuscript published online as a “Just Accepted” manuscript. “Just Accepted” manuscripts appear in full as PDF documents accompanied by an HTML abstract and are accessible to all readers.
