Olivia Swanson Haas, a sophomore majoring in English and minoring in Drama at Stanford, has been selected as a finalist in the Manhattan Theatre Club/Dentyne "Realationships Student Playwrighting Contest." Her play Love Story – A Revelation in One Act is one of four that will be produced and performed at The City Center in New York on May 14, 2009. Four finalists, including Ms. Haas, will be flown to New York May 11 to participate in rehearsals and other activities. One of the four student plays will be selected as the Student Contest winner.

Entrants were invited to submit an original short play on the theme "sustaining personal relationships in the age of technology." The winner will be determined by a panel of judges who have no prior connection to the plays or the contest. This panel consist of three playwrights whose work has been produced at MTC: Pulitzer winner David Auburn ( Proof) , Adam Bock ( The Receptionist ), and Liz Flahive ( From Up Here ). These three judges will read the scripts “blind” (no names, no schools) and select the winner prior to the performance. "This contest, and its beautiful generosity and timing, goes a very long way to encourage younger artists. I am delighted to know Olivia has made it this far,"  writes Peggy Phelan, professor of Drama and English and chair of the Drama Department, who serves as advisor to Ms. Haas. Olivia Haas has also been awarded a Haas Center for Public Service Community Arts Fellowship to work this summer with DESTINY Arts Center doing arts education and violence prevention, and will serve as Producer for Gaieties 2009.
