EQUIPMENT
CHECKOUT:
Fall
Quarter Hours 2:00 - 3:15 M- F and by appointment
If you need to check out equipment outside
those hours, please send an e-mail first to kbmiller@stanford.edu so
that I can arrange to be here and let you know if the equipment will be
available.
TECH ASSISTANCE:
If you have questions or need some in-person
assistance, please try to write to me first at kbmiller@stanford.edu . I have office hours set during the time students are likely
to be on campus and out of class. With advance e-mail, you can
book me first or set up an appointment outside of office hours. And
of course, if I'm unable to resolve the issue, I can direct you
to someone who can. Fall Office Hours: 1:30 - 3:15
M- F
DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERAS:
Almost all of the miniDV cams have been
checked out. Use of a DVCam should first be
coordinated within your supervisory group.
If that option doesn’t work, then please contact STEP to arrange
a check out. Please make these
arrangements with STEP as far in advance as you can, because the number of
cameras is limited.
SONY
VAIO LAPTOPS:
As you know, STEP has about 15 laptop computers for
students to checkout. Each has a 40 GB hard drive, and CD-R and DVD
player. All are wireless and have the usual Essential Stanford Software
plus the MS Office Suite.
PURCHASING VIDEO TAPES:
You can buy miniDV tapes for between $5
and $7.00 a piece at the following locations:
Stanford Bookstore (convenient but more
expensive)
Most drugstores and some grocery stores, please ask (e.g. Walgreen’s, Long’s, Safeway etc.)
Fry’s Electronics’ in
Best Buy, Good Guy’s,
Costco
You can re-use the one tape STEP has
given you, but we highly recommend that you use a different tape for each
recorded observation (or anytime you tape your classroom) and archive your
footage on the dv cassettes. It is much cheaper and time efficient than
trying to capture the entire 45 or 90 minutes of video (3 times) into
video editing software.
PLAYING BACK TAPES:
While using the cameras to playback the miniDV
tapes is not ideal, it is currently one of the few options we have for the
great many students who must watch at least part of each videotaped observation
with their supervisors and who need to watch the tapes on their own. As
always, please treat this equipment, carefully, gently and patiently.
Equipment for viewing tapes:
Please reserve time for the Tingey Media Lab
by signing up on a clipboard hanging on the lab door. This will
become very important when all 100 students are trying to review their
tapes. Instructions for using equipment are posted on the wall inside the
Lab. Please use your own ID card to access the room and remember the
system will log you as the person in the room if you give access to anyone
else.
UPDATING YOUR ID Card:
Take your Stanford ID to the ID Card
office in its new location. Ask to have access to
CERAS 310 added to your Stanford ID card.
Stanford ID Card Office
(Cashier's Office)
Open Mon–Fri,
8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
(closed 2nd Tues. of each month)
(650) 498-CARD

FILE MANAGEMENT:
We urge you to develop some
system or habits for saving, organizing and backing up ALL of the work
(including supervised observation reflections) you do while in STEP. Not
only do you need to organize your files so that you can retrieve them quickly
and easily while on campus, but you will want to reference most of this work in
your final assignments. Do not put this off until the 11th hour. Be
good to the future you!
It’s a
good idea to back up your work to removable devices, such as CDs and USB
mini flash drives (or memory sticks). All lab computers and VAIOs have CD burners. Stanford Bookstore
carries the flash drives and good deals can be found online. Every year
someone in STEP loses all of their work due to loss, theft or harddrive crash. Harddrive
crashes are not a matter of if, but when.
H
DRIVE:
Here are
instructions for setting up your H Drive from any computer (including the labs
or your very own). Each person is allowed 1 GB of space however if you
are trying to upload a file of 50MB or more from off campus, better to come on
to campus and use a CD or flash drive to transfer it to your H drive from
a lab computer.

STEP TECH BLOG:
Finally, I will try to limit my announcements
regarding Tech to only the most important (applies to everyone, relates to
assignments, etc.,). If you would like to keep
up to date on software deals for students and other tech news related to STEP,
please visit and bookmark my blog:
I will be posting copies of all of my
official email announcements there as well. The first 10 people who
go to my blog and post a comment
on an entry will win a free coffee from me! That’s for reading
my email message all the way through and for paying attention!
