In 1993, the taxonomy of the domestic dog was changed from Canis familiaris to Canis lupus familiaris, a subspecies of the Gray Wolf. Evidence from behaviour, morphology and molecular biology indicated that the Gray Wolf is the common ancestor of all breeds of domestic dogs. The exact way in which domesticated canids evolved is a source of controversy, but most scientists agree that human interaction was a key factor in shaping the process of natural selection that took place. Canine Ancestry depicting a Gray Wolf skull, pays homage to this ancestral heritage, the evolutionary process, and the remarkable relationship forged between humans and the dog breeds of today.
