Cubberley Pavilion
The Pavilion is located at 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto, only about
3 miles south of Stanford, near the San Antonio Shopping Center. It has
the biggest dance floor around this area. Dances take place on every Friday
and Saturday nights, and SBDC's Sunday class instructor Robin Rebello
teaches there on Fridays. The Pavilion also has an unbeatable admission
fee - for $6 you get the lesson AND a whole night of dancing. So check
out there web site now and see what classes they're offering this weekend!
You'll probably end up running into your fellow SBDC members there!
Starlite Ballroom
If you want a classy night of dancing, Starlite will be the place to go.
Their ballrooms are very nicely decorated, but as a consequence they charge
more for admission - $10-12 for class and party, depends on which day
of the week. Starlite offers lessons and parties on Thursday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday nights, which is a lot more frequent than most ballrooms
and studios around this area. Perhaps this is why Starlite has become
the second favorite hangout place for SBDC members. Starlite is located
at 1160 N. Fair Oaks Avenue in Sunnyvale, only about 20 minutes away from
Stanford.
Imperial Dance Studio
If you are interested in learning the International style of ballroom
dancing, Imperial is definitely a good place to start. The owners of the
studio are Stephan Krauel and Denise Jourdaine, four-times US ten dance
representatives. Stephan and Denise are also coaches of the Stanford Ballroom
Dance Team. Imperial offers beginning and intermediate classes in International
Standard and Latin on Wednesday nights, it also offers classes in American
style on Monday nights. The studio is conveniently located at 822 Cassia
Street in Redwood City, only about 10 minutes away from Stanford.
Jammix
Jammix is a montly dance party organized by Richard Powers, a Stanford
Dance Department faculty. It meets on every second Friday of the month
at the Roble dance studio, with occasional changes, so make sure you subsribe
to the Jammix mailing list for the most updated info. Jammix is a place
for Stanford students to practice the moves they learn in the Social Dance
classes offered by the Dance Department. They do mainly swing, lindy hop
and vintage style waltz such as cross-step and rotary waltz, with an occasional
Hustle or Polka. Sometimes you can also find them all lined up doing a
Shim Sham (a line dance based on lindy hop) or the Chicken Dance. Admission
is $2 per person.
Alberto's
Alberto's is SBDC members' favorite place to Salsa! They have salsa lessons
and parties on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Many top-notch
salsa dancers teach there, and the usual crowd normally consists of some
hard core salsa dancers. Alberto's is located at 736 Dana Street in Mountain
View, near Castro Street. If you like Salsa, you can't miss it!
