Do I need to be a student to join?
No. Stanford students, faculty and staff are allowed to sign up early
and hence have priority in SBDC classes. However, we are very happy to
have members who are not Stanford-affiliates join the club.
Do I need a partner?
Not at all--many, if not most, people sign up without a partner, and everyone
is encouraged to rotate partners during class. Our online registration
system is designed to approximate lead-follow balance. You are welcome
to sign up with a partner if you would like to do so.
What does Introductory vs. Intermediate mean?
An introductory class does not assume previous dance experience. Our introductory
classes are appropriate for members new to a particular dance or new to
dancing in general. A intermediate class assumes that you have a solid
understanding and grasp of the basic patterns used in the particular dance
being taught. In most cases, you may treat a previous quarter's introductory
class as a pre-requisite an intermediate class. However, please note that
some of the more challenging dances (e.g., Lindy Hop, Hustle, and West-Coast
Swing) may be taught as "introductory classes" at the intermediate
level. In these cases, a year of general dance experience is a prerequisite.
What if I miss the first class day or decide to drop after the first
day?
We still take sign-ups (and give refunds) up to the
second Sunday of the quarter. After the second Sunday,
the club does not accept late sign-ups or give refunds except in VERY
unusual circumstances. The lessons build on each other every Sunday, so
admitting latecomers can hold up the rest of the class. The club does
not pro-rate class fees, since we do not want to encourage late sign-ups
or early withdrawals.
Do I need special shoes?
Yes. Standard dance shoes, leather soles, or socks are all okay. Please
do not wear hard-soled or black-soled shoes. For more information on dance
shoes check out the Ballroom Dance Supply and Ballroom Connection websites.

for them? Click here!
Do I have to rotate partners?
It is highly encouraged. Dancing with different partners will help you
become a better social dancer by teaching you to adjust to the leading
or following skills of others. It will also make you appear less of a
Dance Snob to other dancers.
Do I have to wear my nametag?
Yes. Your nametag will be printed and can be found on the bench outside
the gym starting on week 1 for those who pre-registered; week 2 for those
who did not pre-register.
How can I get more involved with the club?
The club is always looking for people to help out. Send email to the SBDC
at sbdc_registrar@yahoo.com
if you'd like to get involved.
What if I have more questions?
Send email to the SBDC at sbdc_registrar@yahoo.com.
