  1. A country of 22 million people.
  2. Bordered by Turkey, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel.
  3. Bashar al Assad has been president since 2000. In 2007, he received 97% of the vote in an election with no other candidates allowed on the ballot.

The Syrian Conflict…

  1. Began as a series of peaceful demonstrations in March 2011 that resulted in brutal crackdowns by the Assad regime.
  2. Has developed into a bloody civil war between rebel groups and the Assad regime, with atrocities committed by both sides.
  3. 70,000 people have died over 25 months.
  4. 2.5 million Syrians displaced. (Over 10% of the population!)
