Learn more about Darfur, and learn more about what you can do to help stop genocide: www.OurPledge.org
Speak out. The genocide in Western Sudan has raged on since 2003. Over 500,000 innocent Darfuris have died. Rape is being used as a weapon of war against Darfur's women and children. In its entirety, the crisis seems too big and too complex, and our response seems too small. STAND exists, however, because we can't rationalize our inaction, and because we don't have the luxury of feeling overwhelmed. The people of Darfur deserve protection and peace, so we will work towards getting them that protection and peace.
No one should stay silent in the face of genocide—Stanford STAND exists to provide a concrete, sustained, and effective response to the worst crime known to human beings. We need your help. For those on campus and in the Bay Area, Stanford STAND holds general meetings every Wednesday at 9pm (during the school year) at the Haas Center for Public Service. All are welcome.
Where does STAND stand on the issues of multinational protection and intervention for Darfur, sanctions against the government of Sudan, etc.? Click here to find out (position paper written by Americans Against the Darfur Genocide).
The Stanford University chapter of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur was created in February 2005. Some selected past initiatives:
- We were the primary coordinators of the April 30, 2006 Darfur vigil and rally on the Golden Gate Bridge and in the Presidio. Over 5,000 took part in the day's events. Click here to read press coverage. In April 2007, we helped organized another high-profile rally at Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco. New Mexico Governor and presidential candidate Bill Richardson and author Dave Eggers were among the speakers.
- Since its beginning, Stanford STAND has organized a number of Congressional visit, call-in, and letter-writing campaigns throughout California. At the end of the 2006-2007 school year, we tallied over 40,000 letters that have been sent via Stanford STAND campaigns and events.
- In 2005, after a Stanford STAND lobbying campaign, Stanford became the second university in the nation to divest its endowment holdings in companies that help to fuel/have helped to fuel the genocide in Darfur. Read our press release for more background.
- Since we started up in 2005, we've raised over $100,000 for humanitarian relief organizations working in Darfur.
- In May 2006, The New York Times and The International Herald Tribune published a Darfur editorial which Stanford STAND helped organize and draft. The editorial was the outgrowth of a Stanford STAND-organized Darfur letter to President Bush, which was hand-delivered by one of STAND's contacts to Oval Office staff in April 2006. Click here to read the editorial. Click here to read the letter.
- We've hosted and organized a number of speaking events on campus. Some past speakers: Elie Wiesel, John Prendergast, Valentino Deng, Brian Steidle, and Philip Cox (the first filmmaker to smuggle himself into Darfur during the genocide). |
