"The course went beyond simply knowing the basic engineering concepts. It was about us asking questions, and learning through discovery. This way, we can be more adaptive when using the concepts and knowledge."

About Program

The Singapore Stanford Partnership (SSP) welcomed its first students in June 2003. Since then, 129 M.S. degree students have graduated from the program. There are currently 29 M.S. degree students and 6 Ph.D. degree students.

The SSP is a joint effort between NTU’s School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Stanford’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering to establish a Singapore-based premier graduate education and research program in environmental science and engineering.

Environmental engineering and science serves an increasingly crucial role as the Asia Pacific region continues to advance and develop while striving to maintain the quality of life associated with clean air, water and land, and sustainability of natural resources. The SSP program plays a leading role in addressing these issues.

Under the partnership, excellence in education and research in the environmental area as well as interactions between academia, industry and government agencies are developed and sustained. SSP's exceptional educational environment and experience, based on an internationalized adaptation of the recognized Stanford program, involves a full quarter term (more for the Ph.D. program) at Stanford University, plus three more terms at NTU. Throughout this program, students are encouraged to explore the field of knowledge in much greater depth and detail, and to develop higher-end critical thinking and problem solving skills.

The SSP offers NTU’s Master of Science (MS) [ending with 2008-2009 academic year] and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Environmental Science and Engineering with additional SSP certification jointly awarded by NTU and Stanford University.

Guided by its international outlook, SSP seeks the most accomplished and motivated students from top universities around the world. Students representing numerous Asian countries (including China, India, Thailand, Nepal, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and the Philippines) as well as the US have joined the SSP program. This international profile promotes the establishment of a strong global network of experts and professionals in the environment and water fields.

The programs are designed to prepare students to be at the forefront of environmental science and engineering with a combination of coursework and project/research components.
