Stanford Symphony Orchestra
2009 Fall Auditions

Welcome to the Stanford Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra auditions!

The SSO and SPO auditions for both newcomers and returning members will be held at the Braun Music Center Room 121 on the following dates:

  • Friday, September 18: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Saturday, September 19: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Monday, September 21: 6:00 - 10:00 PM
  • Tuesday, September 22: 6:00 - 10:00 PM
  • Wedesday, September 23: 6:00 - 10:00 PM (for make-up or recall auditions only)

Auditions are open to all members of the Stanford community. Although students are given priority, we also welcome musicians from the local and non-Stanford community. Please sign up for your audition time by logging onto sso.acuityscheduling.com.

Each audition will be 10 minutes long and consists of three parts:

  • A solo work of your choice. This could be a part of a concerto, sonata, or a solo passage from a major orchestral work.
  • Orchestral excerpts. We have listed audition repertoire for each instrument. You can download and print them out from our website. If you have difficulty getting music, please contact Martin Fraile, mfraile@stanford.edu
  • Conductor's choice. This could be sight-reading of an orchestral excerpt or scales.

For your information, the Stanford Symphony Orchestra will rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:15-9:45. The first rehearsal will begin on Thursday September 24th at 7:15 in Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

The SSO student committee is planning an overnight retreat for all members on September 26th and 27th at Monte Toyon Camp in the Santa Cruz mountains. Please check our website for more details.

The Stanford Philharmonia Orchestra is a select chamber orchestra of 35 performers. The orchestra offers accomplished musicians an opportunity to perform a rich repertoire of traditional and contemporary works for small orchestra in a professional setting.
