about

SSCLES, as an organization, runs on four fundamental pillars: academics, professionalism, familia, and outreach. The four serve as the framework through which we reach our goal of increasing the number of Latinos pursuing academic and professional careers in science and engineering.

 academics

Our academic efforts have been varied, but have included the items below.

* Problem Sessions Students can get help on their homework assignments or attend a pre-exam review session.

* Course Advisor Students can more easily form study groups and compare homework assignments by consulting our database of the courses that our members are currently taking. * Study Breaks Sometimes taking a break helps clear the mind.

* GPA Mentorship An academic and mentorship program designed to provide guidance to members through more experienced members. Freshmen and sophomores are typically paired with a junior or senior, and juniors and seniors are usually advised by a graduate student.

* Latino Speaker Series Three Latino professors who are very distinguished spoke of their experience, research, and what it meant to be Latino in an academic context. The speakers were from Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, and Computer Science.

* PhD Candidate Speakers During a regional mini-career conference, SSCLES hosted two outstanding PhD candidates in Environmental Engineering and Electrical Engineering to discuss their latest research.

Professionalism

SSCLES strives to place its members to corporate engineering and science positions through the programs listed below.

* Company Presentations
SSCLES members get a good exposure to an eclectic mix of companies, representing industries from Biotech to Software to Consulting to Finance.

* Professional Development Workshops
Learn how to write a resume, what to do in a career fair, and how to interview effectively.

* Freshman and Sophomore Leadership Scholarship
A scholarship targeted toward a select group of freshmen and sophomores that are or want to be activiely involved in SSCLES. The group is sent to RSLC, a great leadership building opportunity held by SHPE.

* Members and Alumni
Some of your greatest resources are members around you and the alumni listed in the alumni section. The majority have held various positions. Reach out to them!

Familia

Many of our activities have been geared toward building a familia within the officers and within the larger SSCLES membership.

* Social Meetings
We convert a few of our Friday meetings into social meetings where members get to chat and participate in fun activities. These activities have included Cranium, an ice cream making contest, a race involving eggs, and many more.

* Outings
Each quarter, we hold one or two social outings. In the past, we've played broomball (ice hockey with a ball, broom, and no skates), volleyball, basketball, etc.

* El Gran Juego
Our own version of the Big Game against Cal. We want to keep that machete!

* Study Breaks
Sometimes taking a break helps clear the mind.

* Officer Outings
As a bonding experience, SSCLES officers have gone bowling, had potlucks, gone out to dinner, had retreats, etc.

outreach

In addition to our on-campus efforts, SSCLES also participates in activities in the comunidad.

* El Dia de Los Muertos

* Raza Day

* Departmental Tours
