Men Keep Stanford Flag Flying High at National Championships
The Men's Team at the Nationals Banquet 2007 at Yale

In a trip to Nationals that could only be described as an emotional rollercoaster, the Stanford men’s team learned one thing: you can’t spell “WON” without “KWON.” The outcomes of all three matches during the Feb. 22-25 visit to Yale fell on the narrow shoulders of senior co-captain “Boy” George Kwon.

On Friday, the men’s team, seeded #6 in the Summers Division, faced off against #3 seed Hamilton College. The Continentals had defeated the Cardinal 6-3 in Clinton, NY earlier in the season, but Stanford was confident that it could pull off the upset. The match started slowly, with #9 Abe Chiang and #3 Ned Henningsen losing tough 3-0 and 3-1 decisions, respectively. Meanwhile, #6 Ben “Ron Jeremy” Peterson scored a quick 3-1 win for the Card to keep the squad in the hunt. In the second rotation, #8 Joe “Grandpa” Kirscher, a co-terminal student, came right back at the Continentals and collected a 3-0 victory to even the match score at two-all. At #5, junior Andy Helppie-Schmieder pulled out a tough 4-game victory while freshman #2 Pat “Jailbait” Bugas fell 3-0. That left the match score tied at 3-3 with the final rotation coming on.

Men's Team Travels to Seattle

This week's voyage to Seattle proved a tremendous success for the Cardinal. Despite the absence of Dave Herbert, Ned Henningsen, Abe Chiang, and Joe Kirscher, the Stanford side showed resolve in the face of the depletion of their rnks and in the face of some truly miserable weather.

The plane for Seattle left SFO Friday afternoon but the team was on the University of Washington courts that night, ready to have a go at The University of Notre Dame team. Brad Pearson, on his first trip for the Cardinal, played both 8 and 9. Brad did not let up a single point—an auspicious start if there ever was one. The rest of the team played well and recognition should be given to George Kwon for pulling out a five game stunner as well as to Pat Bugas who played his first match in the one spot. After the match the men retired to their rooms and a much reserved rest.

Stanford Squash Founder Honored With Humanitarian Award

Jason Miller, one of the three founders of the Stanford Squash program, was recently honored as the 2006 recipient of the Peace and Humanitarian Award granted by the Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution at Sacramento State. Since leaving Stanford just a few short years ago, Jason has not only been actively working in a dual MD, PhD program at UCSF but he has also been a key figure in the efforts to rally forces and promote efforts in resolving the Darfur crisis in Sudan. Jason was a key factor in the UC system divesting investments in Sudan and is the National Policy Director for the Sudan Divestment Task Force. Stanford Squash would not exist where we are today without Jason's intense efforts. We recognize those same skills in Jason's determination and results in addressing this critical world issue.

Stanford Club Team Just Misses Another Win of the Decathlon Club Team Tournament

The Stanford Club Team entered this year's Decathlon Club Team tournament (Jan 26-27) as one of the favorites, having won in the past. This year's team was captained once again by the very able (and willing!) Dave Burgess. The Club team got to the finals against the Pacific Athletic Club and played a quite exciting match. The match score was at 4-4 with two matches entering their fifth games. The match score ended at 5-5 but PAC beat the Stanford Club on total games - 20 to 19!

The men’s team traveled to Bowdoin College last weekend for the Maine Classic, winning a pair of riveting 5-4 decisions to St. Lawrence University and Colby College.

Arriving in Maine late Thursday night after a cross-country flight and a three-hour drive from Boston to Brunswick in through a snowstorm, the Cardinal wasted no time hitting the courts. Friday afternoon the squad played the home team, falling to a strong Bowdoin team 9-0. After a quick layover at Applebee’s, the team headed back to the hotel, where sophomore Ned Henningsen went “swimming” while the rest of the team rested for its evening match-up against St. Lawrence.
