Notice (13 October 2006):
We have booked five courts on Saturday mornings from 10:30-1:30 for drilling and open play. This will be some organized drilling and practice. All club and community members are welcome. We have also blocked all of the courts for open round robin play on Monday and Thursday nights from 7:30-9:30. Please rotate after one or two games and play with different people. We Encourage everyone to come out and mix it up with different partners.
September 2006: Practice Begins + Team Tryouts.
Team practices for the 2006-2007 resumed unoficially at the start of the school year, on Monday, 25th September, but official practices start on Monday, 2nd October.
If you are interested in trying out for the men's or women's teams, please show up at the squash courts at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 4th October. We are only interested in students who have played squash before or have extensive tennis backgrounds. Rackets will be provided. June 2006: Lily Lorentzen coming to Stanford.
Adding to the amazing story of Stanford Women's squash, eight-time U. S. National Junior champ and only the fourth
collegian ever to win the women's Intercollegiate Individual championship as a freshman, Lily Lorentzen, has
transferred from Harvard to Stanford. Slated to play at the #1 position, Lorentzen will provide an unprecedented boost
to the Stanford Women's team. Lorentzen begins her career with the Cardinal this coming Fall.

May 2006: Jonathan Power and Martin Heath coming to Stanford!

Stanford University is excited to present an exhibition match between Jonathan Power and Martin Heath on Monday, May 15, beginning at 7:00 P.M. Jonathan Power of Canada is widely recognized as the greatest shot maker of all time. He was ranked #1 in the world until he retired from the pro tour a few months ago. Martin Heath of Scotland is also a world class player who reached as high as #4 in the world rankings. This is a rare and fantastic opportunity to see two of the greatest players of our era in action.

17-19 Feb 2006: Men's Team travels to Princeton for Nationals
The Stanford Men's team traveled to CSA Nationals in Princeton on Feb.
17-19. Coming of their busiest season ever, the team was psyched to make a
run at the Summers division title. The team entered the weekend at #23 and
met #18 St. Lawrence for the first match on Friday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the men lost a hard match 7-2 with George Kwon and Joe
Kirscher netting efficient 3-0 wins. Ned Henningsen played the match of the
day at #5, only to lose 10-9 in the fifth game. On Saturday, the Stanford
men met Conn College in the consolation draw, eager to avenge a close 5-4
loss from earlier this season. Again, it was not to be and Stanford lost
7-2 with close wins from George Kwon and Jon Levine. After two
disappointing losses, the Stanford men faced Middlebury for their last
match of the season on Sunday morning. The team really pulled together and
played some good matches to win 6-3 and finish the season off with a

2-5 Feb 2006: Stanford Squash Hosts First Annual West Coast Round Robin
On February 2-5, Stanford Squash hosted the first ever West Coast round robin. Held in the new Arrillaga Center, this year's round robin featured Stanford, Cal, USC, UC-Davis, Washington, Notre Dame and Air Force. With several players in the top of the ladder out due to injury, the lower lineup of the Stanford Men's team had an opportunity to show their top game. The team played some great matches and went undefeated at 5-0 for the weekend. From Thursday to Sunday, the facility was bustling with players and the courts were all full as the west coast teams gained valuable match experience. All in all, the weekend was a great success and Stanford Squash looks forward to hosting many more!

20-22 Jan 2006: Men and Women Travel Together to Yale
The men's and women's teams travelled together to Yale for the annual Yale Round Robin over the third weekend of January. See results here, and a trip report by men's team player and enthusiast, Dave Herbert.
Stanford Round Robin Results
This weekend, Stanford Squash hosted the first round robin its brand new seven-court squash facility in the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center. The men's teams from Hamilton, Connecticut College, Denison, Cal-Berkeley and Cornell, along with the women's teams from Connecticut College and Cornell all converged in Palo Alto for a weekend of squash.
The Stanford men's team opened Thursday night with a 7-2 loss to a strong Denison team while the Stanford women played a scrimmage against Cornell. Afterwards, the women's team faced Connecticut College and were defeated 7-2 with #1 Brooksie Riley and freshman #8 Liz Buck both posting wins.
On Friday, the men's team warmed up for the match against traditional rivals Cal-Berkeley by playing a scrimmage against Cornell. That evening, Stanford followed their 6-3 win at Cal in November with a 8-1 victory at home. After all the matches were completed, more than 80 players and coaches gathered for a dinner on campus at the sports café, where Stanford coach Mark Talbott spoke about the rapidly growing squash scene on the west coast.
On Sunday, the Stanford men faced tough matches against close C division rivals Hamilton and Connecticut College. In the morning, Stanford faced Hamilton and the match was a nail biter as Stanford #3 Patrick Stella lost a heartbreaking 5th game tiebreaker to leave the overall match score tied at 4-4. In the deciding match, new #9 player Andy Helppie-Schmeider pulled out the key victory to give Stanford a 5-4 win over Hamilton. In the afternoon, Stanford narrowly lost to Connecticut College with #3 Patrick Stella and senior captain #4 Aaron Ligon pulling out close wins to tie the match at 4-4. Unfortunately, Stanford was unable to complete a comeback and lost the last match to give Conn a 5-4 win.
This first round robin at the new courts was a great success and everyone at Stanford Squash is appreciates the time and effort from all the teams that flew out to California to participate. The teams are now looking forward to the first week of February which will see them host the second annual West Coast round robin with Cal-Berkeley, Washington, Utah, USC and many more set to visit.
Women's team travels to Wesleyan; defeats #14 ranked Colby and #16 ranked Tufts.
The women started slow--dropping their first two matches 3-6 to #16 Middlebury and 0-9 to #9 Bates on Friday night, before defeating #25 Mount Holyoke, #14 Colby 5-4 and #16 Tufts 8-1 on Saturday. The women lost their last match of the weekend 1-8 to #13 ranked Bowdoin. Squash highlights of the weekend included Steph Kwok dominating the deciding match against Colby in her first weekend of squash competition, Brooksie playing nearly flawless squash against Tufts, Lizzie scowling her way to victory (4-2 on the weekend), Cate and Ashleigh showcasing their dramatic improvement over last year etc. etc. The off-court highlights are too many to enumerate in such a short space. Meanwhile, the men's team had another scrimmage against the Club on Saturday morning. The men's team was defeated again but there was a great turnout by the club and everyone enjoyed several good matches.
Men's team takes their show on the road, while women's team beats up on high schoolers
This past weekend, the Men's team travelled to the East Coast and had a
hectic weekend in three different venues. On Friday night, the men suffered
a tough 4-5 loss to George Washington University's in front of a large
crowd at GWU's new squash center in downtown DC. The next afternoon at the
Naval Academy, the men were again defeated 0-9 by a very strong Franklin
and Marshall team.
Early on Sunday, the men lost 1-8 to Navy with Joe Kirscher pulling out a hard fought win
at #7. After the Navy match, the team drove like banshees through the back
roads of Delaware to inaugurate the new Haverford squash center in
Philadelphia. With #1 Andrew Burmon injured, the team still managed to put
together an 8-1 win against a Haverford team backed by a raucous crowd.
Coach Mark Talbott then finished the event with an exhibition match against
a Haverford alumnus before the team hurried to the Philadelphia airport to
make their evening flight back to California.
Meanwhile, the women's team and the members of the men's team who didn't travel played a home match against The Cate School, a boarding school in Santa Barbara, followed by a match against members of the Club. Stanford definitely beat the prep-schoolers and the final match scores will be posted when Tournament Director Samuelson compiles them.
Men's Team versus Club
The tradition of preparing the men's team for an East Coast trip arose again this past Monday. The men's team played a club team in the inaugural team match in the amazing new squash center. The men's team will be traveling to the East Coast this Friday to play at GWU in DC, then to Navy for a team round robin Saturday and Sunday, and finally to Philadelphia to play Haverford later on Sun.
Club and team members played 14 matches on Monday, with the club beating the team by a score of 9-5 (6-3 in the top nine). Both team and club players enjoyed their matches; everyone is looking forward to future club-vs-team play.

New on-campus squash facility opens
On Friday, September 23rd the Stanford squash community gathered for a ribbon-cutting
ceremony to celebrate the opening of a new seven-court squash facility in the Arrillaga
Center for Sports and Recreation. Following the ceremony, the Stanford squash
founding committee attended a dinner for Stanford donors, at which former women's team captain
Maisy Samuelson was the only student who spoke. Read the transcript of her speech

Stanford Athletics promotes Women's Team to Varsity for 2006-2007
On the same day, Athletic Director Ted Leland announced that the Stanford women's squash team
will be promoted to Varsity status, effective next season. Until then, the team will be classified as

Women's Team Nationals
Seeded fourth in the C Division, the women's team won their first round
match against #21 Connecticut College 6-3
before losing to the eventual C Division champion #17 Middlebury 8-1.
They then won their final match over #23 Franklin & Marshall by a
score of 5-4
to finish the season ranked an impressive #19. Read all about the women's team and their run

Men's Team Nationals
Coming into Nationals the Men's team ranked #19, giving them the #3 seed
in the C division. In the first round they encountered a strong #22 Tufts
team and and lost 7-2,
leaving them with a tough match against Conn College - a team which had
defeated Stanford 5-4 earlier in the year. The Stanford men, however,
defeated Conn College by a score of 6-3
the next morning.
This left another showdown in the consolation finals between the two highest ranked club teams in the nation - Denison and Stanford. After several close matches, Stanford pulled out a 5-4 victory to finish the season ranked #20 and, for the first time, as the best club team in the nation. Thanks to all the alumni and parents for their support.
