Rio de Janeiro Historical Address Locator
This geocoding service allows the user to map street address locations on the historically accurate streets of 19th century Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Street names and numbering changed dramatically in Rio during this period; our team has created three address locators in order to capture these changes accordingly. This is an ongoing project and will be updated regularly. We will soon make available comprehensive lists of all the street names in our HGIS, to improve ease of use. In the meantime, please use the information below to achieve the best results with this service.

How to Map an Address
Select a date range for which this address is relevant (1849-1870, 1870-1878, or 1878-1888).

Then input the address using the following format:
number + street type (abbreviated) + street name
example: 13 r conde

These abbreviated street types are recognized by our system:
b (Becco)
ld (Ladiera)
lg (Larga)
pc (Praca)
pr (Praia)
r (Rua)
t (Travessa)
