Whitney Berry
GIS Research Assistant
Whitney Berry began working in the lab as a student research assistant in spring 2008. She quality-checked datasets and researched the history of conserved land parcels for the Bay Area Conservation and Development project. Whitney also gained GIS experience through several research assistantships and internships at the Stanford Humanities Center, South Bay Cities Council of Governments, The Urban Group, and for Professor Karen Seto's Fundamentals of GIS course at Stanford. In June 2008, Whitney graduated from Stanford with a Bachelor's degree in Urban Studies. Now a GIS Research Assistant in the Spatial History Lab, Whitney supports student research projects, develops tutorials and exercises to teach key GIS skills, and works closely with the Principal Investigators.

Mithu Datta
GIS Specialist
Mithu Datta has been the lab's GIS Specialist since October 2007. Mithu has Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Geography as well as a Bachelor's degree in Education. She also brings with her over ten years of programming and development expertise in the private and public sectors including at Tobin Datagraphics, City of Austin (Texas), Ducks Unlimited, Wade-Trim Associates, Ford Automobiles, and Livingston County (Michigan). In the lab Mithu provides technical guidance from inception to completion for each project and troubleshoots and develops GIS solutions.
Killeen_Hanson
Killeen Hanson
Lead Research Assistant on Shaping the West
Killeen Hanson was one of the Lab's first research assistants in summer 2007. During this time she helped set up the lab, research references to butterflies and grazing in historical newspapers for the Critical Habitat project, and find and georeference historic USGS quads for the Shaping the West project. In June 2008 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford with a Bachelor's degree in English and minor in French. Now as a Staff Researcher, Killeen directs Professor White's Shaping the West project. She manages the project's student researchers, provides direction and perspective, oversees logistical and practical details, and determines and directs long-term project goals.

Kathy Harris
Lab Manager
Kathy Harris has been the Lab Manager since June 2008. She has received a Master's degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies from Emory University. Kathy's experiences prior to joining the lab include working as a Project Manager at the University of Oregon's Community Planning Workshop, National Network for Environmental Management Studies fellow at the Environmental Protection Agency, and Native Plant Conservation intern at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Kathy coordinates the lab's diverse research efforts, serves as a liaison between faculty, staff, and students, and administers the day-to-day operation of the research facility. She loves the interdisciplinary nature of the lab's research projects and exploring opportunities for visual design in academic research.

Erik Steiner
Lab Director
Erik Steiner has served as the Lab Director since April 2007. Erik also holds a permanent position at the InfoGraphics Lab in the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon, where he has worked since 2002. Erik has over a decade of experience in leading the development of major dynamic mapping applications, including the award-winning Atlas of Oregon CD-ROM and Interactive Nolli Map Website. Erik comes to the lab as a visiting scholar who is passionate about building creative collaborative relationships within and between disciplines. He loves the opportunity to work in the Spatial History Lab on projects that combine technical, artistic, conceptual, and quantitative aspects.
