SLS Team Wins TYLA Regional Tournament

February 22, 2009

Stanford Law School earned a bid to the TYLA National Championship Tournament for the second consecutive year.

The program sent two squads to the qualifying tournament, which is organized by the Texas Young Lawyers' Association. The regional, hosted by SLS for the first time in the program's history, featured fourteen teams from West Coast law schools arguing a civil case filed by a widow seeking to collect on her husband's life insurance policy.

Team "TYLA 1" -- Samantha Bateman (SLS '10), Rachel Juarez (SLS '10), and Rakesh Kilaru (SLS '10) qualified for nationals after four hard-fought rounds. After defeating UC-Davis and UC-Hastings in the preliminary rounds and Golden Gate in the semifinals, Stanford faced off against UC-Berkeley in the finals. TYLA 1 then took two out of three ballots in the finals to advance to nationals for the second straight year.

Team "TYLA 2" -- Kyle Maurer (SLS '11), Noah Sullivan (SLS '11), and Josh Weddle (SLS '10) -- also broke to semis. There, TYLA 2 won the round on points but lost 2-1 on ballots to the Berkeley team TYLA 1 defeated in the finals.

This marks the first back-to-back appearance at the National Trial Competition for Stanford, which will look to improve on its finish at the national competition last year.

The program would like to thank Todd Theodora for extensively coaching both teams, Samantha Bateman, Kevin Papay, and Libbey Van Pelt for their tireless work in organizing the tournament, Jillian Del Pozo and Chidel Onuegbu for their support and assistance, and all of the students and professionals who came to serve as witnesses or judges.

SLS looks forward to representing Region 13 at NTC in March.
