Dan Shih, Emily Zachar, and Brian Sandstrom celebrate making the final round in Stanford's first appearance at the TYLA National Trial Competition.
Two Stanford Law School Mock Trial Team made superb showings at Stanford's first appearance at the Texas Young Lawyers Association National Trial Competition tournament this weekend in Spokane, Washington. Twenty-five teams from a dozen schools competed in the tournament, which involved presenting and arguing a wrongful death case.
Stanford Team B made the final round of the tournament, defeating two teams from UC Hastings and teams from Boalt, U of Washington, and Seattle U. Dan Shih (3L) captained the team, which also included Brian Sandstrom (2L) and Emily Zachar (1L). This was the first regional tournament for Brian and Emily.
Stanford Team A also performed superbly, demolishing two teams before being eliminated in a late round. Tony Lopez (3L) captained the team, which included Olga Kuskova (2L) and Christopher Smith (2L).
Olga Kuskova, Tony Lopez, and Chris Smith relax after competing at the 2006 TYLA National Trial Competition.
Everyone gave stellar performances. The Stanford teams proved especially adept at presenting creative theories that so stunned opponents that the other side's case fell into disarray. Special kudos go to Emily, who despite being a 1L with no prior mock trial experience proceeded to make mincemeat of many a 3L lawyer from other schools.
