Research

The Jeffrey Lab concentrates on breast cancer research. Although still a fairly young lab, we are part of the collaborative group that pioneered human solid tumor genomics using cDNA microarrays, developed by Pat Brown and colleagues here at Stanford. In a close collaboration with Pat Brown in Biochemistry, David Botstein in Genetics, and Anne-Lise Børresen-Dale, Chief of Genetics at the Cancer Research Institute, Norwegian Radium Hospital, University of Oslo, Norway, we are involved in a major effort to define molecular subtypes of breast cancer. We use T7-based RNA amplification techniques and genome-wide expression profiling of tumors with 42,000 clone cDNA microarrays. Molecular tumor profiles are correlated with clinical and pathological data in the expectation that results will impact patient care within the next decade.

In addition to molecular subtyping of breast cancer, our lab is particularly interested in three areas:
1. Molecular profiling of invasive lobular carcinoma
2. Tumor microenvironment (epithelial-stromal interactions in breast cancer)
3. Ethnic variations in breast cancer

We are also studying the effects of cell culture on gene expression profiles of primary breast cancers with Dr. Shanaz Dairkee, Geraldine Brush Cancer Research Institute at CPMC in San Francisco.
