Internet Use and Mental Well-being
This project was intended to fill a gap in the current knowledge about how the structure and duration of Americans' daily activities affect their emotional health and wellness. Using data from Time Study, we examined how Internet use in and out of the workplace affects emotional well-being.
We examined the effects of various Internet activities, such as email and web browsing, on mental well-being; this allowed us to assess how the allocation of time to different activities during the day translates into psychological well-being. We focused on mood and other self-reported aspects of psychological wellness, such as loneliness and depression, as well as satisfaction with work, family relationships, friendships and life in general. The first article resulting from this research is being prepared for submission to academic journals.
Census 2000 - The Hard Count
This project systematically examined Census 2000 data in an attempt to learn about the counter effects of the major mobilization effort undertaken by the U.S. Census Bureau and a public privacy debate that erupted during the Census taking in 2000. This work resulted in a book focused on three major issues: the effect of the mobilization campaign on Census mailback, the comparative effect of privacy debate on Census mailback, and, finally, the impact of changing family structures on Census taking.
The project was a collaboration between Kenneth Prewitt (the immediate past director of the Census Bureau), Norman Nie, Sunshine Hillygus (Assistant Professor at Harvard University and a former SIQSS research assistant), and Heili Pals (Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida and a former SIQSS research assistant); it was supported by a consortium of private foundations including The Russell Sage Foundation, The Ford Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Carnegie Corporation of New York. Data collection was directed by Profs. Norman Nie and Jane Junn.
