The New Normal in Israel:

A Hybrid of Terrorism, Shadow Wars, and Armed Conflict

Dr. Levite is a Nonresident Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He served the Israeli government as Principal Deputy Director General for Policy at the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission (2002-2007), Deputy Israeli National Security Advisor for Defense Policy (1999-2000), and Head of the Bureau of International Security at the Israeli Ministry of Defense.  Dr. Levite was also a Visiting Fellow at CISAC, Stanford University (2000-2002) and has published extensively on issues of strategy, military doctrine, deterrence, arms control, proliferation, and intelligence. He holds a Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University and has been honored by France with the Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur.

The International Law Society presents Promoting the Arab Peace Initiative as a Basis for a Comprehensive Middle East Peace with Dr. Walid Salem Thursday, April 18 Room 280A, Stanford Law School 12:45 pm – 2:00 pm Food will be served “Nonviolence sends a message to the dominant powers in the world that our struggle is a popular one. It calls for the end of occupation. It is not a terrorist struggle that aims to destroy the Jews nor a threat to the stability of the region, as we are accused.” Walid Salem is the director of Panorama, the Palestinian Center for the Dissemination of Democracy and Community Development in East Jerusalem and author of numerous texts about the conflict. He was imprisoned by Israel a number of times in the 1970s and 80s for being an active political member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Walid joined Panorama after the initiation of the Oslo process, and has since conducted joint studies and activities with Israeli academics and peace groups. He also conducts training sessions in democracy, nonviolence and civil society building with Palestinian groups. Please RSVP for this event HERE.
