Congratulations Graduates!

Beta Class
Spring 2003

Kristin Sanderson

#1, Elixir

Hi all!  My name is Kristin Nicole Sanderson, a current senior majoring in Cultural and Social Anthropology.  I am a part of the tight Beta Class, represent!  I was born in Gallup, New Mexico and lived on the Navajo reservation for a good portion of my life and moved to Newtown, Pennsylvania for high school.  I'm pretty chill and easy to get along with.  My nickname, Elixir, according to my line sisters, signifies my ability to make people feel better and to make them laugh.  I love spending time with my Sigmas and cannot imagine what my life at Stanford would have been without them.  I enjoy shopping, chunky necklaces and bracelets, solid colors, taking pictures, huge sunglasses, the occasional jog, my pink cell phone, playing with little kids, making fun of my roommates, my family and Navajo peeps, watching The Food Network, and black nail polish.

#2, Sage

Year: 2006
Hometown: Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Major: Cultural and Social Anthropology

Hey all! Here's a bit about who I am and where I come from: I was born and raised in Mexico, one of two children, a nerdy little girl who loved to read and run around with my brother. The strong bond I have with my brother has greatly influenced my life, as such, when I got to college I missed that unique, unconditional love and support siblings offer. That's when I found my Sigmas. These ladies have become my sisters in every sense of the word. I love and enjoy every second we spend together; knowing that we're there for each other in the good and the bad times is amazing.

I have often been described as a calm, practical, and serious person. I probably am. Yet, I'm also deeply passionate and emotional. I love knowing that I can be all of myself with my sisters; they accept me complications and all. I love to travel (I spent a quarter in Chile with Sonia, Rocio and Amanda...my sandz). I'll also be going to Berlin next fall, really exciting! I love to laugh, watch movies, read books, dance, listen to music in spanish, eat Mexican food, run around like crazy, and lounge around all day.

#3, Trouble

Hometown: Dallas, Texas
B.A in Chicana/o Studies 2006
M.A in Secondary Mathematics Education 2007

I believe that the best way that I can create change in society is through education. Empowering youth is my passion and I am very fortunate that I found a strong calling early in my life. One day I hope to open up a school that is dedicated to uplifting youth in every aspect of their lives.

I became a Sister of the Most Honorable Sigma Theta Psi Sorority, Inc. in Spring of 2003. It was honestly the best decision I have ever made. Not only do we do so many worthwhile programs as an organization, we also have unconditional SISTERHOOD with each other. Because of my involvement with Sigma Theta Psi, I now look for opportunities to be a leader in my other endeavors. From life-long relationships to preparation for community leadership, ST? has forever changed my life for the better.

Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing!

#7, Sugah Pie

Hometown: Milwaukee, WI and proud of it!
Class of 2006, Human Biology and Spanish Major, AAAS Minor, Pre-Med

Now that I’ve returned from DC where I spent the summer working as a Research Fellow for the Council on African American Affairs, I am devoting my senior year to wringing every last drop of pleasure, satisfaction and fulfillment from my Stanford career. This means working on my senior honors thesis, dancing with Los Salseros, working at the Black Community Services Center, serving as President of Sigma Theta Psi Sorority, serving as Finance Chair for Black Graduation, and living it up in Suites with the rest of the Sigma Suitehearts.  Given the limited space in which I am to summarize my entire life, I'll be throwing out some words for your free-association pleasure: theater, salsa, hip hop, neo- soul, Brazilian food, big families, road trips, rain, beaches, dancehall, international experiences with your sisters, obstetrics and gynecology, the Revolution, the Talented Tenth, optimism, Gemini, and living like nothing is outside your means.

#11, Puma

Hometowns: Austin, TEXAS (512) | Berkeley, CALIFORNIA (510)
Major: Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity
Minor: Human Biology
Sorority Position: Vice-President

Hey wassuupp everyone!  First and foremost, I will let you know that I got hella love for all my SIGMA sisters. Honestly, growing up like an only child and being raised by a single father, I was graciously rescued by my newfound sisterhood in the spring of 2003 and became part of the Beta Class (only the best). My sisters are the reasons I can survive the daily hardships of living as a Stanford student. love you sorors!

Next, a little more about me: I love traveling-- I was in Chile during fall of my junior year (with 3 of my sands!!), and before that I was in the Philippines (with alpha class, holler at a homeland). I also love FOOD, music of all sorts, dancing, art, learning about new cultures and new experiences, sports, cruisin', the outdoors, animals, going out last minute, spoken word, a cool breeze on a sunny day, the stars, Philippine beaches, my crazy family, Aquarians, and being open-minded. If you ever meet me, you'll probably notice that I'm pretty outspoken, spontaneous, and I like to daydream.

Nneka Chike-Obi

#17, Justice

I'm Nneka Chike-Obi, class of 2006, majoring in International Relations, with a minor in African Studies. I'm from the great state of New Jersey, which I still think is cooler than California. Outside of the sorority, I am involved with Naija (Nigerian Students Association) and Stanford in Government (I was a SIG fellow in summer 2005), and I work at the Black Community Services Center.

My favorite hobby is watching TV, especially the Food Network. I also like hanging out with friends, eating Chinese food, and reading for pleasure (which I can never do at Stanford).

I love to travel; in the past two years, I have been to the UK, Ghana, Tanzania, Germany, Nigeria, France, and Spain. After graduation, I will be starting graduate school in London in the fall. I hope to eventually work for an international organization, like the World Bank or the International Labor Organization, and get involved in development in Nigeria.
