Purpose
Sigma Theta Psi was formed on November 13, 1991 at San Jose California by eighteen women seeking to solidify and immortalize the values and responsibilities that embodied their persons. They strove to share their message of cultural diversity, respect and compassion with other women. Through our unity and sisterhood, we continue to embrace our diverse cultures and excel in our life ambitions. By the means of honesty, loyalty, respect, open-mindedness, leadership and academic excellence, we carry forth the vision of these eighteen women.
Academics
Academic achievement is a central goal of Sigma Theta Psi. In addition to maintaining a standard of academic excellence among our membership, we also make an effort to bring scholars to campus who can enlighten the community as a whole. One such scholar was Max Dashu, the creator of the Suppressed Histories Archive and the "Women's Power" presentation.
The sisters of the Delta chapter have diverse majors and career goals. Our alumnae have gone on to work in several different fields. Our sisters have earned various fellowships, scholarships, and awards, including: the Mary Forchic Scholarship, Education and Youth Development Fellowship, Ron Brown Scholar, President's Scholarship, Cap & Gown, Mary & Jacquelyn Edmonds Prize in Human Biology, Haas Summer Fellowship in Public Service, Stanford in Government, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity Internship, and State Senate Fellow Program.
Community Service
Our national philanthropy is Breast Cancer, and we have our annual Breast Cancer Week in October. Our Breast Cancer Week programming includes 3-on-3 basketball, Salsa for the Cure, and participation in the Making Strides Walk. We have also sponsored a Community Day workshop on Multicultural Story-Telling and Crafts and a Media and Self-Image workshop during the Raza Day Conference. Our chapter has also worked with Upward Bound high school students to provide workshops and service learning opportunities in the local community. We endeavor to expose our students to ways in which they can transform their own communities. We are always open to, and searching for, more ways to contribute to society.
Sisterhood
Our organization prizes sisterhood above all else. Through the process of becoming sisters in this intimate organization, we form a bond that is unparalleled by any other relationship. We regularly hold Unity events and retreats to actively nurture this bond in addition to the natural growth and evolution of our sisterhood as we live and work together throughout the year.
Social Events
In past years, we have hosted an annual party, Solid GOld along with our step show and competition, Unleashed, followed by the after party, Encore. Unleashed and Encore were an effort to increase the amount of collaboration and communication among the Stanford Greek community. We also have socials with sororities and fraternities from on and off campus. Sigma Theta Psi Sorority, Inc. is also a member of the Multicultural Greek Council.
