David Henry Hwang, Stanford class of '79, received a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Award and John Gassner Award for the Broadway debut of his play M. Butterfly in 1988. The play was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. For Hwang's play Golden Child, he received a 1998 Tony nomination and a 1997 OBIE Award. His book for the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Flower Drum Song earned him his third Tony nomination in 2003. Hwang wrote the book for Disney's Broadway production Tarzan, with score by Phil Collins, and co-authored the book for Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, which ran almost five years on Broadway and won four 2000 Tony Awards. Other acclaimed plays include FOB, The Dance and the Railroad, Family Devotions, The Sound of a Voice and Bondage. Hwang has earned fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts. He serves on the Council of the Dramatists Guild and also served on the President's Committee for the Arts and the Humanities under President Clinton.
