Immigrant Integration
The immigration population now comprises more than 11 percent of the total U.S. population. Should we follow the example of other countries (e.g., Canada) by providing new immigrants with training in occupational or language skills that allows them to enter the labor market quickly and successfully? The New American Community Initiative is a prominent experiment with such a program.
If you wish to assist with integration programs, consider volunteering or donating in the following ways:
- Teach immigrant children. Join Teach for America or volunteer to teach English (ESL) to immigrants in your community (see dosomething.org).
- Make a donation. Visit donorschoose.org to choose from among thousands of teacher requests for funding. Or sponsor a book drive (see The Heart of America Foundation and the I AM Foundation.)
