Members and Staff of the SCRL Board of Directors

RESIDENTS SERVING ON THE SCRL BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Therese (Tessa) Baker-Degler

Therese (Tessa) Baker-Degler, Mears Court.

My interests in serving on the SCRL Board stem from two sources. First, I have co-chaired the Stanford Historical Society’s Historic Houses Committee for the past four years, and contributed to the research and writing of the histories of pre-1930s campus houses in Books III and IV. In addition, I carried out an oral history of the original owners of Mears Court houses, built during the campus housing expansion that began in the 1960s. These interviews showed how the street was initially developed, maintained and changed over the past 40 years.

Second, prior to retiring, I was an academic sociologist, first in Chicago and then, for 13 years a founding faculty member at a new Cal State campus in North County San Diego. Developing a new campus for a new university was an intense experience in “community” building. Stanford faculty, staff and their families are the benefactors of the Stanford’s original plan to build a residential campus for both students and faculty. It is essential that the current residents of the campus houses take responsibility to maintain and strengthen this special community, and I am prepared to help SCRL achieve these goals.

Naturally, I am interested in historic preservation issues, and am familiar with some of the challenges that have had to be addressed to the county. I am also especially interested in community building: fostering programs and efforts that will bring residents together to address problems (traffic issues, home security, etc.) and also to strengthen social connections among the residents. I would also be interested in working on efforts that might be undertaken to support and plan for the growing number of elderly among the campus residents.

Jennie BernheimJennie Jayne Bernheim, Estudillo Road.

Jennie has been a campus resident for 10 years. She and her husband, Doug, have two children in elementary school and a golden retriever. Jennie is hard at work on her first novel, and since she wants it to sell, it has nothing to do with Stanford or the neighborhood. In her previous life she was on the management team for the Sundance Film Festival, held administrative positions at Stanford and Harvard, worked for KCBS radio, CBS Sports, KQED and worked in media relations for the National Basketball Association. She currently helps out on the Welcome Committee for SCRL and volunteers too much at her children's school. Jennie is most interested in the Community Planning Project, Stanford Avenue issues, traffic calming, traffic/sidewalk safety, tree planting, anything that helps community building and outreach.

Chuck Bonini

Chuck Bonini, Vernier Place. Treasurer of the SCRL Board of Directors.

Chuck is an Emeritus Professor at the Stanford Business School. He has lived in his current residence on Vernier Place in Frenchman’s Hill for over 15 years. He has served on the SCRL Board for the past eight years. As Treasurer, a lot of his focus has been on the financial issues related to SCRL, including Chair of the Ground Rent Task Force. He considers an active SCRL important for communicating with the University and for representing leaseholders. He is a HAM radio operator.

Bob and Evi built their house on campus in 1969 and raised four children, two of whom attended Stanford. Bob is Professor of Applied Physics and has served in the Stanford administration in the past as Associate Dean of Humanities and Sciences, and as Dean of Research. He is interested in building stronger relations with the university and in renewing the vision of housing on campus as a key asset and benefit to the Stanford family. He has participated in the political process to secure a voluntary historic housing ordinance in Mountain View, and is interested in finding a better balance between homeowners’ rights and the interests of the broader community as expressed through zoning ordinances.

Bruce Clemens

Bruce Clemens, Tolman Drive.

Bruce has been on the Stanford Faculty in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering for 20 years. For most of that time he lived off campus, but moved to his campus home on Tolman Drive in 2005 with his wife, Stacey Bent, who is a faculty member in the Chemical Engineering Department at Stanford. They have two school-age children. Issues that interest Bruce are 1) energy conservation and alternative energy; he would like to see conservation of energy and water be encouraged in any way possible; 2) He would also like to promote cycle safety and access. Bruce is a regular cycle commuter, having logged around 75,000 miles commuting to and from Stanford by bike during the time he has been on the faculty; 3) Foothill and park development and access. He is a regular runner and hiker in the local hills, including the dish area.

Norma is the school secretary at Gunn High School. Their two daughters live in Oklahoma (one owns an equine training center) and Maryland (busy at the TSA ensuring that your airplane travels are secure). Nicely avoiding the question, “how long is too long?”, let it be said that except for three years in the Navy (’57-‘60), Bob has been at Stanford since 1952, being Class of ’56, MS ’57, and Ph.D. ’63.  He has been a faculty member in Civil and Environmental Engineering since 1962. Ellen Waxman, Peter Coutts Circle

Ellen lives with her daughter, a third grader at Nixon. She has been a campus resident since 1998, and before that, lived in College Terrace. She used to love biking and has aspirations to be a frequent user of the area's bike trails some day. Before graduating to Nixon parent status, she was a long-time CCSC parent. Ellen recently expanded her range of interests from school-age children, parks, and play spaces, to dogs and the peaceful coexistence between cats and dogs, an area where she hopes to increase her expertise rapidly. She has also recently become a big fan of Mutt mitts and appreciates the opportunities to recycle without ever having to leave home. Ellen came to Stanford in 1995 to serve as the Ombudsman for the School of Medicine, and was introduced soon after to a variety of housing and community issues. Ellen also served as the University’s Ombudsman. Since 2002, she has been the Director of Faculty Relations at the medical school. More recently, Ellen has been interested in issues involving the Palo Alto schools and because she continues to be drawn to thankless, no-win situations, served as Nixon’s representative to the AAAG (school boundary task force). In good weather, when not at work, she can usually be found hanging out at either the Peter Coutts pool or the pool at SCRA. Ellen loves living at Peter Coutts and is interested in working to benefit the homeowner communities on campus.

He is presently active in the SCRL Emergency Committee, being particularly interested in, and concerned about, disaster preparedness. In the recent past, he has been active on other SCRL committees, such as Senior Housing, Nominating, and Solid Waste Disposal.
