FITS. (William Barnett, Nicholas Vandenberghe, and Crista Sanders) This case examines the strategic and managerial dilemmas of the small, one product firms, FITS. FITS, which has a close relationship with Silicon Graphics, has an advanced image software product which brings powerful image processing to the users of desk-top computers. The case explores some of the managerial issues at FITS and poses the question of what is a firm beyond a product?

Hewlett-Packard. (William Barnett, Peter Zemsky, and Morton Hansen) This case examines the "makeover" of a Hewlett-Packard division from a traditional instruments maker into a pioneer in video technology. The case notes the interplay between the role of corporate R&D and divisional entrepreneurs. It also highlights a dramatic change in the competencies and mission of a division, which is not infrequently required in fast-paced industries. This case is currently undergoing final approval at H-P.

Oracle Corporation-A. (William Barnett and Steve Jurvetson) This case is a comprehensive look at the risks and difficulties of managing high-growth firms. As Larry Ellison notes at the outset of the case, high-growth is attractive, but also carried its own set of challenges. The case details some of these challenges, particularly those related to human resource issues and the problems of maintaining product quality.

Telecommunications Industry Note. (Robert Burgelman, Andrew Groves, and Alva Taylor) This case examines the telecommunications industry. It provides an introductory outline of the major concepts and facts of the US telecommunications industry. Covered are descriptions of the wireline industry, wireless market (currently cellular service), and the cable industry. It is both an entry point to the industry for those unfamiliar with it, and a refresher for those with a telecommunications background.
"The US Telecommunication Industry in 1996" (John Foster, MBA 1996) under the direction of Robert A. Burgelman and Andrew Grove.
The Wireless Communications Industry: After AT&T-McGraw. (Robert Burgelman, Andrew Grove, and Alva Taylor) This case provides a detailed study of the contemporary telecommunications industry. In particular, the case highlights the differing strategies of AT&T, Motorola, and the Regional Bells in gaining a future role. The players agree on what is technically possible, but differ in their position, profitability, and underlying motivations. Convergence with related information industry markets looms in the future as well.
