xKabir in Song
Coming this Autumn
The music of the fifteenth-century Indian
religious poet Kabir will be performed at Stanford on Sunday,
October 5.
The concert, entitled "Kabir in Song,"
features poplular folk singer Prahlad Singh Tipanya and classical
singer Dr. Krishna Kant Shukla, accompanied by

folk musicians of Malwa, Madhya Pradesh.
The performance will be introduced by event organizer Linda Hess,
Kabir scholar in Religious Studies.
The free performance will take place at
2:00 p.m., in Campbell

The Stanford event is part of a U.S. tour
by the performers arranged by Hess with sponsorship of the Indian
Council for Cultural Relations. ARC will serve as the local host.

With this issue, the Asian Religions &
Cultures (ARC) initiative inaugurates a quarterly email newsletter.
ARC
Spectrum is intended to provide a convenient update of news
and events of interest to our growing list of friends, both on
campus and in the community.
Spectrum,
edited by ARC associate director Wendy Abraham, will appear on
the ARC website at the beginning of each academic quarter. Publication
will be announced through our email lists.

Islam to Get
Stanford Program |
|
The School of Humanities and Sciences has
begun planning for a new program in Islamic studies. As a first
step, the Department of Religious Studies has announced a search
for a senior scholar of Islam.
The program begins with a $9 million endowment,
as a result of two major gifts to the university, matched by
H&S Hewlett Challenge funds.
