Resources at VA Palo Alto Health Care System

The Rehab R&D Center is located at the Palo Alto Division of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Investigators maintain active and ongoing collaborations with a number of clinical and research Centers here, including those described below.

The Geriatric Research and Education Center (GRECC) is active in research, education, and clinical care. Its mission is to improve medical, phychological, and social services for older veterans, to advance scientific knowledge through geriatric and gerontological research, to train health personnel in the care of older individuals, and to develop improved models of clinical services.

The Western Blind Rehabilitation Center provides orientation and mobility training for up to 120 patients a year. It is a valuable resource for data pertaining to navigation and social integration strategies for people with a variety of vision impairments.

The Spinal Cord Injury Center (SCIC) located in Building 7 provides acute treatment and rehabilitation, as well as long term follow-up, for spinal cord injured veterans. SCIC's interdisciplinary approach includes specialized therapeutic interventions, educational programs, and specialized clinics. The Center also includes an ambulatory care program, therapy section, and urodynamic and clinical research laboratories.

The Bone Histology Laboratory is a 300 square foot facility located in Building 7 of the Palo Alto VA. This laboratory supports both histological specimen preparation of bone sections and cells, and bone tissue culture studies. Equipment for preparing histological sections include a low speed diamond saw, a bone/implant precision microtome, ashing oven and fume hood. Tissue culture equipment includes a laminar flow hood, tissue incubator, centrifuge and cryostat. Other equipment in the laboratory includes several scales, baths, freezers and ovens. Cleaning and autoclave facilities are located nearby.
