International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics: Conference Support

Investigator: H.F. Machiel Van der Loos, PhD

Project Categories: Stroke / Spinal Cord Injury - 2000

Background: Since 1990, the International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR) has been held every two years, and is the only regularly scheduled conference in this field, attracting 60 - 80 professionals with a wide geographic representation. The purpose of ICORR is to provide a forum for attendees to communicate their laboratory experiences to their peers. The conference is 2 days, has a single presentation track, and covers the topics of Interface Design, Evaluation, Software, Hardware, and Clinical Applications (e.g., spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy).

Findings: For ICORR'99, held at Stanford University in July, 1999 and attended by 75 people, the grant from SCRF increased the conference budget by 25%. The additional amount brought in a distinguished speaker in the field of Robotics, Prof. George Bekey, and paid for shipping expenses that allowed for four live demonstrations of robots from distant labs. It also paid for 10 travel fellowships for researchers in countries out of the mainstream U.S. and European R&D programs and students anywhere in the world. For researchers with different clinical experiences and living in different social structures, we felt that it was important to allow them to participate more fully in the premiere conference in the field.
