Kinematic Models of Normal and Painful Osteoarthritic Feet

The purpose of this collaborative study with the Seattle Center is to develop a new foot kinematic model based on the PCT and to conduct a pilot study on patients with antalgic gait due to ankle OA and subjects without ankle OA using the new and a traditional foot kinematic model.

Specific Aims

Aim 1: Develop a new foot kinematic model based on the point cluster technique (PCT)

Aim 2: Conduct a pilot study on patients with antalgic gait due to ankle OA and subjects without ankle OA using the new and traditional foot kinematic models

Aim 3: Determine which of the two-foot kinematic models employed in this study is more sensitive to quantify differences in foot and ankle kinematics between subjects with and without ankle OA

Progress during 2006

Work Accomplished

  • Pilot data was collected on one female subject (Stanford)
  • Captured data using Qualisys MCU240 cameras and Vicon MX4 mega pixel systems

Main Findings

  • Resolution in the Qualisys system (and the current Vicon system at the VA Puget Sound) is to low for current practical applicability
  • Increase in camera resolution would improve ability to capture static and dynamic trials

Plan for Subsequent Years

  • Create virtual foot marker model
  • Will be used to develop the point cluster technique (PCT)
  • Six segments will be used to begin (Hallux, lateral forefoot, medial forefoot, midfoot, calcaneus, and tibia)
  • We will determine relative motions between adjacent virtual segments
  • Acquire a new camera system in mid March that will allow us to collect human subject data
  • Collect human subject data
  • Process data collected from the VA Puget Sound’s new camera system and share the results
  • Submit abstract
