We ventured up to San Francisco's hip Mission District to sample the
modern Italian fare of Delfina. This new restaurant puts a refreshing
spin on the classics of Tuscan cooking with the subtle influence of the
Mediterranean. With the interior surrounded by mirrors and contemporary
art, the restaurant, has a stylish and happening atmosphere. Being so
crowded on a Wednesday night, a weekend reservation could be hard to come
by. We started out with a zesty Sangiovese to whet our appetite. For appetizers
Ariel decided on the parsnip soup and I chose the baby spinach salad with
mushrooms, which we were told were foraged in Napa. For a main course,
Ariel had the gnochi with Italian sprouting broccoli. The sweet broccoli
sauce was delicious, but there were so few pieces of gnocchi that it seemed
more like an appetizer. I had the Quinalt River steelhead (another name
for salmon) with melted leeks and meyer lemon-caper butter. The fish was
so fresh and moist that it melted in the mouth. It was undoubtedly some
of the best salmon we had tasted. To finish the meal, Ariel had a scrumptious
assortment of profiteroles, which were fluffy pastries flavored with a
filling of espresso ice cream and a topping of warm chocolate. For desert,
I had a panna cotta, which was similar to a flan with smooth buttermilk
flavor. Overall our meal was quite delightful, but we only wish the portions
were bigger so we could have eaten more of the mouth-watering cuisine.
