The 1950's and 60's were the glory days of Italian cinema, when icons such as Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni graced the screen. 350 Italian films were produced each year- from the indulgent films of Federico Fellini to the neorealist films of Robert Rosellini. Horror films and spaghetti westerns - from directors like Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, and Sergio Leone - reigned the film industry in the 70's and 80's. Although Italian film directors have since been struggling with creating a new Italian genre, there have been triumphs, such as the Academy Awards of Gabrielle Salvatores and Roberto Benigni.
