What are CAs for? We plan activities to help you enjoy your time as a graduate student at Stanford. We want you to feel at home in Lyman, and if you have any ideas for activities or general questions, please feel free to contact us! We are not like undergrad RAs, so we do not have keys to let you into your room, or the power to change your roommate assignment, but we can tell you to whom you should talk. We can also help point you in the right direction if you're having academic problems, feeling lonely, or just have an issue you'd like to talk to someone about. Our doors are always open, so please feel free to come talk to any of us.
We encourage you to participate in events! You’ll come to find that Stanford has a lot to offer outside the classroom and laboratory – whether you’re here for just a one-year Master’s or a seven-year Ph.D, we hope you take the opportunity to make new friends and explore the Bay Area. Maybe you’ll meet the love of your life in Lyman or your future business partner. The CA's generally put on one Lyman event a week, but we encourage you to organize your own events (see below for facilities we have at Lyman for hosting events) or get in touch with us about your ideas for things you'd like to do. You can see the complete calendar for Lyman events here: http://lyman.stanford.edu/events.html
In addition to Lyman events, there are hundreds of clubs and organizations at Stanford that are open to graduate students -- whether it's singing, dancing, sports, martial arts, religious life, or anything in between, Stanford probably has a club or organization that is devoted to it. There are also lots of academic support groups on campus that can help you meet other grad students in the same situation. All of these organizations are represented at GOALIE, the annual graduate student activities fair, and at the undergraduate Activities Fair, and we especially encourage new grad students to go and see what is out there.
Lyman is your home! Please be respectful of your neighbors and Lyman property – try to abide by the rules set by Res. Ed. in your Residence Agreement, and let someone know if you witness suspicious behavior. If something breaks in your apartment or around Lyman, use the Fix-it system to get it addressed: https://fixit.stanford.edu/
Official quiet hours begin at 11 PM from Sunday to Thursday, and at 1 AM on Friday and Saturday. If you feel somebody is being too loud (even if it’s not during quiet hours), please ask him/her politely to lower the volume. The CAs can help or point you in the right direction if needed.
Smoking is NOT allowed anywhere in Lyman, period! You can smoke outside as long as you're at least 20 feet from the building. A good rule of thumb: if you're on a paved road or parking lot, you're probably far enough away.
Household trash and recycling should be put into the large dumpsters/recycle bins located in corrals at the end of Building 1 and Building 3. Please use the small trashcans by entrance doors only for individual pieces of trash, not garbage bags, since the trashcans fill up very quickly. Don't pile up trash or trashbags next to garbage cans; this is a sanitary hazard and will attract the local raccoons right next to our front doors.

Lyman's official list is lyman-folks@lists.stanford.edu, where we will send announcements about events, activities, and free food! Everyone is automatically added to this list, so if you want to unsubscribe or change your options, visit https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/lyman-folks
Only Lyman CAs and staff can post to the lyman-folks list, but we have another list serve open to everyone. To send messages to the community for unofficial announcements, garage sales, to start sports groups, or if someone left their car lights on, send your email to: lyman-unofficial@lists.stanford.edu
You can unsubscribe, change your options, or get general information about the unofficial mailing list at: https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/lyman-unofficial
Useful computing tips and in-room network registration can be found at: http://rescomp.stanford.edu
If you need help setting up your internet connection, the man with the plan (aka your Residential Computing Consultant) is Leiwen Wu (lyman-rcc@rescomp.stanford.edu)
Lyman has a computer cluster with dual-boot iMacs, printers, and scanners located near the oak tree. The cluster also houses Lyman's brand new group study room with whiteboards and a big screen for practice talks. Some of the furniture has yet to arrive, but will shortly.
Mail can be picked up from the mailroom located near the oak tree.
Your address:
121 Campus Dr. Apt. ####A or B
Stanford, CA 94305
Packages are a perennial problem: USPS packages will generally be left in the mail room for you to pick up. Anything else (UPS, FedEx, DHL) will not be delivered reliably; the carrier may drop off the package somewhere in Lyman, or they may leave a note somewhere on a Lyman door, but it is likely that the package will not get to you in time. So if you can, send all such packages to your lab, department, the GovCo housing office, or somewhere else a live person can sign for it when the carrier comes around.
Lyman has a beautiful common room known as “The Atrium,” located next to the big oak tree between Buildings 1 and 3. It is a reservation only space. To reserve it for private group gatherings, go to: http://lyman.stanford.edu/lounge.html
Lyman has one TV lounge equipped with a flatscreen TV, VCR, Gamecube, X-Box 360, and PS3 in the quadrant closest to Building 1. Another lounge (labeled "office") in the room next to the mailroom has a Foosball table, while a third lounge next to the computing cluster contains a table tennis table. As renovations near completion we will be adding games, DVDs, extra paddles, and even some new furniture.
The Laundry Room is in the quadrant of the Lyman common rooms closest to Building 1.
Don’t have quarters for laundry? No problem! Laundry is included in the rent for students living on-campus and even better, you can go online to search for washer & dryer availability! http://www.laundryalert.com/cgi-bin/stan9570/LMRoom?XallingPage=LMPage&Halls=14
Check out the Stanford Unofficial Guide book that was delivered to your apartment (one book for each roommate) for fantastic information and great coupons (there is stuff for free with no catches!) or check out the website: http://unofficial.stanford.edu
