Apply to be an ATA at EAST House.
EAST House employs three Academic Theme Associates (ATAs) to help fulfill the house’s goal of innovative East Asian
cultural programming. The ATAs bear considerable responsibility in the residential program and can expect to spend at least six to ten hours a week on
theme- and house-related activities, as well as additional hours during EASTfest. Flexible schedules and a willingness to spend considerable time in the
house and at house-related activities are expected of the ATAs.
The application process for EAST House ATA is now closed for 2009.
The Five Main Responsibilities of EAST House ATAs
- To help residents develop and present theme-related programs and projects, including a series of in-house seminars on various topics relating to Asia. ATAs are expected to help create seminar topics, design schedules, maintain faculty liaisons, contact speakers from inside and outside the Stanford community, encourage house participation, and entertain speakers.
- To present theme-related programs of their own.
- To foster the involvement of faculty members from fields related to the theme by inviting them as meal guests, program presenters, etc.
- To attend a staff retreat in September and to help prepare the house for the arrival of residents. To meet regularly with the RFs, RA, managers, and RCC as part of the residence staff and to share responsibility for making the house a well-functioning, active house and community. ATAs are expected to attend house events, especially theme-related events, to get to know students in the house, and generally to help things run smoothly.
- To help give shape to EASTfest by heading one of the EASTfest committees: publicity, entertainment, speakers, fund raising, and food and decorations. (EASTfest is an annual event celebrating East Asian culture that has traditionally involved a program of seminars, performances, food, and events.)
Compensation
ATAs receive a partial waiver of board
fees (90% reduction in 2007-08), and the opportunity to live in a single
room in the house. Other benefits include the chance to broaden their
understanding of East Asia, and to meet a wide variety of students and
faculty in the course of the year.
Please note that ATAs must
have one year of guaranteed housing, which will be used if selected.
ATAs must be registered for all three quarters, except for graduating
seniors.
Selection
ATAs are selected by the Resident
Fellows on the advice of the current ATAs. Interviews for regular
applicants will be held Monday, April 14, 2008 through Monday, April
21, 2008.
