MOST IMPORTANTLY: Subscribe to the CroMem
email list
Regular CroMem announcements and email communication among residents are sent out through the CroMem list, cromem@lists.Stanford.EDU. Therefore, it's a good idea to join the list soon after you've settled in:
Please send a message with "subscribe cromem" in the body to majordomo@lists.stanford.edu. That is, just do it as follows.

CroMem Office
The university also assigns staff to all the student residences.
Right now (in 2004), Anna Carriel is the Student Housing Services Associate for Crothers Memorial and Crothers Halls. About her:
Email address: acarriel@stanford.edu.
Phone number: (650) 736-9985.
Working address: Stern Residence Hall-WA102 (in the residency building with entrance facing Sweet hall)
She is the one to talk to regarding your mailbox, your room assignment, move out dates, housing policies, lockout, etc... She posts very important messages on our Crothers Memorial-announce list, so be sure to read all of her email messages.
Sometimes, the housing officers may vary from time to time. Just in case that one day this information is outdated, to find out the right person, please check Student Housing's contact information. The Community Associates (CAs) are your resource people. CAs are student volunteers. They will be very happy to answer your questions about the dorm and help you in any way. The CA's also plan some of the dorm's social and educational programs. If you have an idea for a program -- social or otherwise -- feel free to talk to an CA or email CAs about funding and helping you organize the event.
Everybody has two keys to your room. Please give your spare key to a trusted friend or neighbor or leave it in a secure place. Use it to get back into your room if you're locked out. If you cannot access your spare key, and you are locked out during Anna's office hours, bring your ID to her office in Stern Hall and she will help you back into your room. At any OTHER time, you have to call the on-call lock-out assistant at 5-1602. The lock-out person should meet you by your room within the hour, give or take. Charges vary with time of day, maximum can be $250 (after midnight or in holidays). For more information, please check lockout policy.
The dorm's formal quiet hours begin at 11:00 pm on Sunday-Thursday nights, 1:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights. During quiet hours, any loud music, talking, or other noise is strictly prohibited. These quiet hours are meant to be a guideline for behavior, not a replacement for common courtesy. We are living close together in this community and all residents are expected to be considerate of others at all times, whether it is quiet hours or not.
The new smoking policy at Stanford prohibits smoking in or about University residences, including common areas, individual rooms and apartments, covered walkways, outdoor areas where smoke may drift into buildings, and during organized outdoor events. You can smoke at least 20 feet away from the building.
Police, Fire, Ambulance
For any type of emergency where you need the Police, Fire Department, or Ambulance
to come to the dorm, dial 9-911. This number should also be called to report
crimes in progress, such as people breaking into cars in the parking lot or
stealing bikes from the courtyard. For non-emergency police requests (for example,
cars parked in the parking lot fire lanes), call 329-2413.
Dorm Entrance Lockup
For security reasons, the outside doors of the dorm will be locked at all times.
Please keep your residence keys with you at all times to avoid the need to prop
open doors. While propping doors open may be convenient, it puts you and your
friends at risk to unwelcome visitors, so please do not prop the doors open.
If you see strangers in CroMem, please contact your CA or call the police at
329-2413 if you feel it is appropriate.
Emergency Assembly Point The Emergency Assembly Point for CroMem is the big red spot painted on the sidewalk in the middle of the courtyard between Crothers and CroMem. In case of fire, earthquake, or other emergency, everyone should meet at this location. You will then be given information concerning the emergency.
STOP (Safe Transportation Project)
A student organization sponsored by local merchants, STOP combats drinking and
driving by providing volunteer drivers. Call 725-STOP Wednesday through Saturday
11pm-2am for a free, safe ride home.
The Blue Lounge is the room across the hall from the TV Lounge. The Blue Lounge contains both a big screen projection television and DVD player! Remember that the Cool Ray Flicks (Official Cromem Event) are every Wednesday 10:00 pm onwards, so don't use it personally during that period.
Quiet hours must be respected while watching movies, having discussions or playing the piano. Should any resident be disturbed by noise during quiet hours, he/she has a right to request the volume to be reduced, or in the case of the piano, for the playing to stop.
Each room and the TV and Blue Lounges have a connection for the STV cable system (The Stanford University cable TV network). The lounges are getting (free) cable service through the University for only the broadcast channels and SITN (Stanford Instructional Television Network) which broadcasts classes.
In addition to broadcast channels and SITN, Stanford provides additional cable channels (like CNN, MTV, ESPN, etc.) and premium channels (like HBO and Showtime) for a fee. You can activate the additional channels through axess. More details about cable channels for dorm room and TV room can be found at STV Channel.
Address all computer and computer room questions to our Resident Computer Consultant or check-out the Residential Computing WEB page.
A real emergency like fires or medical -- call 9-911 from a campus phone then contact one of your CAs. For more emergency information, please check Stanford Emergency Information Website.
