Desolation Wilderness October 5-6, 2002

Ten of us headed out into the unforgiving wilderness on one frosty October morning. Only nine of us would return...

That's not quite true, it was actually quite sunny and warm, and all ten of us did make it back. We met at the gear shed at 6 am Saturday morning! And we left at 6:40 am, not bad at all! My car, the first car to arrive at the Echo Lake Trailhead arrive at 10:20 am and that was after stopping at the ranger's station to get permits! Here's us packing up in the parking lot...

After getting ready we had to wait for the other two cars and do a car shuttle to our final destination: Mt. Tallac Trailhead Parking Lot. The car shuttle took about an hour round trip and when we came back we found the rest of the group lounging in the sun...

Finally, at 12:30 the whole group was packed and ready to go!

Middle: Annie, Cathy, Wendy, Harris, Kelsey
Front: Kwong, Sam, Maddie

The first day we hiked about 6 miles with about 1000 ft. elevation gain. In other words a very chill day.

Here's a cool tree I saw along the way.

Lunch! Yum! We had pepperoni, cheese, PB & J, tuna, bagels, pitas, and a sweet bean drink that I don't remember the name of!

We arrived at Aloha Lake at around 4 pm. Since it was just so nice and sunny we decided (or I forced them) to go swim in the lake. After a few ear piercing screams everyone did some swimming.

The group swam out to a shallowly submerged rock and yelled for me to take a picture.

Lounging in the sun after swimming was the best part!

After swimming we all got on our warm wool caps and tried to regain normal body temperature.

At this point my camera died, so I will put up more pictures when I get them from the other people on the trip!

That night we had a variety of gourmet and non-gourmet grub including, but not limited to, ramen, cous cous, cooked spinach, carrots, pasta, fried garlic, hot sauce, other veggies, dumplings, chai, spiced cider, tea, and water.

On to Day 2!
