1. Movie Night: The Bourne Ultimatum

Rains movie night is back after the break with the Bourne Ultimatum,
at 9pm on Wednesday in Willis Lounge.
Matt Damon returns as the amnesia-stricken trained assassin Jason
Bourne in this third film based on Robert Ludlum's best-selling
novels. As Bourne travels from Moscow to Paris, Madrid, London, New
York and Tangier, Morocco, in a quest to reconstruct his past (and
thus clear the way for a future), he's joined by returning cast
members Julia Stiles and Joan Allen as well as new co-stars David
Strathairn and Paddy Considine.

2. San Jose Sharks take on the Vancouver Canucks!

Come out on Thursday, January 10th and watch the San Jose Sharks take
on their Western Conference rivals - the Vancouver Canucks. We only
have limited numbers of tickets to the game, so email Adam
(agrossma@stanford.edu) to reserve your spot.   When you reply, be
sure to indicate whether you can drive and how many others you can
take with you.  I will have to give priority to drivers if not enough
people volunteer.  The cost per ticket is $18 for Rains residents, $25
for non-Rains residents (the tickets have a face value of $32).  If
there is lots of demand from Rains folks, we will have to restrict the
number of guests we can take.
This game is going to be amazing! Go Canucks! Or, if you prefer, Go
Sharks!

Catch a showing of "Hot Rod," the hilarious Andy Samberg Comedy! Free
movie snacks and beverages abound!
Movie synopsis:
What better way to impress step-dad than to jump Snake River Canyon on
a moped? That's the premise of this over-the-top action comedy from a
pair of "Saturday Night Live" veterans. Akiva Schaffer directs, and
Andy Samberg stars as the accident-prone daredevil determined to carry
out the ridiculous feat in this silly send-up of Evel Knievel's
famously unsuccessful jump. Sissy Spacek and Ian McShane ("Deadwood")
co-star.

4. Dinner With President Hennessy

Here are the details from Andy Hernandez:
On Thursday, January 17, 2008,  President John Hennessy will visit
the graduate community to meet graduate students.  The President will
host a dinner and conversation from 6:00-7:30 p.m. for 20 students at
the Buttery at Rains Houses.  It's an opportunity for students to
meet the President and discuss issues of interest to the graduate
community.
If you're interested in attending the dinner, please email Andy
Hernandez of the Graduate Life Office at android@stanford.edu no
later than 5 p.m. on Monday, January 7 and provide the following
information:

1st year/Continuing Graduate Student
Living On/Off Campus
Topics for Discussion
If the sign-ups exceed the 20 spaces allotted, we will select
students randomly from groups divided by school and on/off campus. If
you are selected to attend the dinner, you will be notified via email
on Wednesday, January 9 and must RSVP as soon as possible.
Both the President and the Provost will host additional dinners
during this academic year, so if you are not selected for this
dinner, there will be more opportunities.

5. Rains Ski Trip- North Lake Edition

This year's version of the Rain Ski Trip will provide lodging at North
Lake Tahoe on the 25th and 26th of January. We will provide a dinner
on Saturday night. New this year we will facilitate group tickets. You
get this all for the low low price of $60 if you are a Rains resident
or $80 otherwise.
Sign-ups will start on the 11th at 6 PM. Rains residents will get
priority until midnight on the 15th. Historically, we have had a lot
of interest in this trip. So, sign up early. There will be a mandatory
pre-trip meeting at 8 PM on the 23rd of January.

6. Christopher O'Riley Piano Performance

We will be going to see the Stanford Lively Arts show on Wednesday,
January 23rd featuring Christopher O'Riley.  O'Riley is an "acclaimed
pianist with wide-ranging tastes and the beloved radio host of From
the Top."  The show, called Reimaginings, is described as follows:
"Deftly juxtaposing piano preludes by Russian master Dmitri
Shostakovich alongside his own original transcriptions of songs by the
British rock group Radiohead on solo piano, O'Riley explores the music
in a new context, revealing shared themes of love, loss, violence, and
alienation."  Rains will subsidize tickets, making them $15 for
residents.  RSVP by this Friday, January 11th to reserve your spot! 
We will meet at Willis Lounge on 1/23 at 7:30pm to drive over to
Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

Ever thought you might want to be a Rains CA?  Rains CAs are the 
people who put on the big social events in Rains, starting with the 
welcome festivities at the beginning of the year, and carrying on 
strong with neighborhood and Rains-wide events throughout the year.  
It only requires a bit of effort.  It's fun.  It's a great way to 
meet people.
If you want to know more about being a CA, come to our FREE 
DINNER/INFO SESSION in February.  We'll have some delicious catered 
food options, and a bunch of CAs on hand to answer your questions 
about the program.

8. Stanford LivelyArts - Turtle Island Quartet

Stanford LivelyArts is great for bringing innovative acts to campus,
and the Turtle Island Quartet is no exception.  They will be playing
the world premiere of a specially commissioned work as well as their
take on John Coltrane's legendary masterpiece "A Love Supreme"!
Rains has secured a block of 12 tickets for this event, and we offer
them to you for only $12 for Rains residents and $17 for a non-Rains
guest (face value for Stanford students is $22).  Email Adam
