Ladies Who Lunch Monday 10/29/2007 at 11:30am CA Contact: Judy (yjhsu@stanford.edu) We all know it's hard to make close friends in grad school, much less female friends. So let Rains help you out! Rains is proud to present the Ladies Who Lunch event, where all of you gals finally have a chance to meet other women in grad school. Come join us for lunch at the newly renovated Old Union at 11:30 AM at Old Union this Monday (note the early start time to avoid the noon food rush). It's simple -- just buy your lunch at the Axe & Palm downstairs, save your receipt for a $5 reimbursement from CA Judy, and then mingle with all of other the fabulous Rains women. We've got a *private* room reserved upstairs (Room 200) and we can also spill over to the comfy sofas outside the room as well. To the GUYS of Rains, don't worry, we didn't forget about you. There will be a guys-only event coming up just for you very soon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Devastating Wildfires - Message From Vice Provost Boardman Wednesday 10/31/2007 at 12:00-noon CA Contact: Peter (pkimball@stanford.edu) Dear Stanford Student, I'm writing regarding the devastating wildfires in Southern California that erupted early Sunday morning and continue to impact communities in the San Diego and greater Los Angeles area. Given the number of our students from California, it is likely that some of you and your families are directly affected. I want to offer the support of staff who can work with students affected by the wildfires to determine what help they may need. At the end of this email are Student Affairs offices and staff who are good resources. To students who may need our help, I encourage you to access support from these staff or other University staff with whom you have a good relationship. Your residence staff and your friends here at Stanford will also want to be helpful. For students who need immediate financial assistance emergency funds can be requested through Student Financial Services in the Maude Modular located at 632 Serra Street (8am to 5pm). The Financial Aid Office can also work with students whose families' ability to handle expenses has changed. Contact Hilda Bravo (725-6088; habravo@stanford.edu) for information. To students who are not impacted by these events, I urge you to reach out and offer your friendship and support to students who are affected. Students who are interested in exploring possible relief- related efforts should contact Jon McConnell (jonmc@stanford.edu) at the Haas Center. One of the many strengths of our community is the compassion and care we show to others in need. Let's make sure we demonstrate this concern in our daily interaction with each other. LET RAINS HELP YOU OUT!! THERE ARE 7,700+ GRADUATE STUDENTS AT STANFORD - HOW WILL YOU EVER MEET THEM ALL?!? Speed dating is a non-contact sport that is gaining popularity. For the second year in a row, it comes to RAINS with grace, style, and, well, a little bit of wine. Here's the low-down: 20 fine young men, 20 lovely ladies, and 3 minutes of love at first sight - or not. After meeting your matches, pick the ones you like, and ditch the ones you didn't - no strings attached! Your information is dished only to those you choose - totally safe, totally hectic, and TOTALLY FUN!!! Attendance will be limited to ensure equal numbers of each sex - to participate, fill out the form online at: http://silverprincess.com/phpsurveyor/index.php?sid=1 BY FRIDAY NOVEMBER 2nd 5PM!! If you are chosen, you will be notified by email by Monday, November 5th. Participants will be chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis and in a manner to promote diversity. INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF GETTING A SPOT: the success of speed dating is highly dependent on gender balance, so if you apply with a friend of the opposite sex (this especially goes for the guys - drag out your cute, shy, friends-that-are-girls-but-not-your-"girlfriend"), you will have higher odds of getting in! And ladies, if you apply with another girl friend, your chance of getting in is higher, too!
