RAINS EVENTS:

1. Bike Ride & Brunch!
Saturday 10/20/2007 at 10:30am

We'll meet at Willis Lounge at 10:30am and head out to do a
medium-sized loop in the area and then we'll go up to El Camino Real
in Menlo Park and stop for a relaxing brunch at Cafe Barrone.

The ride will last 45-60 minutes, with the unavoidable medium-sized
hills that are everywhere in the area.  We'll have several meeting
points to keep the group from spreading out too much, and you'll all
be provided with a route map.

If  you've never been to Barrone before, it's an excellent place to
grab brunch/lunch, or even just to sit with a coffee and a book or to
do work.  We'll sample from their delectable choices of omelets,
sandwiches, and drinks.

The chances for rain are small, but if it's raining we'll reschedule.

2. H&M and Union Square shopping trip

Your old pair of jeans looking a bit worn and tattered? Want to look
good for that cutie in your GSB class? Join your fellow Rainsians
this Saturday on a shopping trip to San Francisco - the main
attraction will be H&M, but residents are welcome to explore
wherever your shopping-addicted hearts desire. Union Square boasts
one of the largest shopping opportunities in San Francisco with
stores as varied as Macy's, Niketown, Forever 21, Sephora, and Urban
Outfitters.

Rains will pick up the tab for Caltrain and BART tickets up to the
city. Residents will be on their own for the ride back south (approx.
$8). We'll be meeting at the Palo Alto Caltrain Station at 2:15 PM
this Saturday.  You can either take the Marguerite to the station to
meet us, or drive yourself and park near the Station.  Look for CA's Julie
and Judy near the northbound ticket machine. The train leaves at 2:30
PM, so don't be late!

3. Aids Walk Silicon Valley & Lunch

All Rains residents and guests are welcome to join the Stanford Grad
Students team as we raise money for services that go to local
residents with AIDS.  We will carpool to the event for those who want
to walk, and anyone can sponsor a Rains walker or donate!  It's going
to be a really fun walk and a great way to serve the community!

We will go out to lunch after, so that will be sweet!!

4. Rains Halloween Party!

annual Halloween Party!  From 9pm to 1am, there will be dancing and
plenty of awesome costumes.

5. Bridge School Benefit!

Rains will be heading down to Shoreline Amphitheater on the 28th at
1pm for the day long Bridge School Benefit Concert, one of the best
concerts in the Bay Area.  The lineup for this year includes acts
such
as Neil Young, Metallica, Eddie Vedder, John Mayer and many others.
We'll be meeting at 1 (or earlier) to head over and claim a patch on
the lawn.  As it's a day long event, prepare to spend a lot of time
hanging out, picnicking and listening to good music, all for a good
cause.

Rains already got the tix for the event, you can sign up on the
signup
sheet at apartment 209-305 starting the 17th.  We have 16 spots for
the trip, at the low low price of $35 (tix are $49 online), *BUT* if
you put your name on the list by the 20th (with a deposit) we'll see
if more tix are available.  Signups are first come first serve, and
checks should be left in the envelope by the signin sheet.

6. San Jose Sharks take on the L.A. Kings!!

Come out on Friday, November 2nd and watch the San Jose Sharks take on
their Pacific Division rivals - the L.A. Kings. We only have 25
tickets to the game, so email Alice (atryan@stanford.edu) to reserve
your spot.   When you reply, be sure to indicate whether you can drive
and how many others you can take with you.  I will have to give
priority to drivers if not enough people volunteer.  The cost per
ticket is $18 for Rains residents, $25 for non-Rains residents (the
tickets have a face value of $32).

7. Stanford Livelyarts - The Idan Raichel Project

Idan Raichel has been on the music scene for 5 years, and has been
immensely popular ever since.  "The Idan Raichel Project was a huge
hit in Israel for good reason: it envisions a modern, multicultural
nation where voices of young and old, Ethiopian and Yemenite, are all
heard in songs devoted to love and tolerance."

The last time Idan Raichel was at Stanford, the concert was sold out
and a big hit.  This time, Rains has tickets for you!  We've got a
block of 12 seats in the middle of the orchestra level of Memorial
Auditorium, regular (student) price is $19, but we've got them for you
for $10!

8. 7th Annual Race Against Pulmonary Hypertension  5k Run and Walk

What: 7th Annual Race Against Pulmonary Hypertension
When: Sunday, November 4, 2007 with race starting at 9 am (meet in
front of the fountain by the Rains office at 8:15 am to walk over to
the race)
Where: Stanford Stadium

We?ve done this race the past few years, and it?s been a lot of fun.
If you're interested, email Jenny (jerhart@stanford.edu) by no later
than Monday October 15th.

Include in the email your name, birthday, gender, age, email, phone
number, address, and t-shirt size.

Registration cost to you will be $15 (with Rains subsidy) , and
includes race registration, a long-sleeve t-shirt, and post-race
refreshments.

This is a race for a great cause. For more information about the

A 5k fun run/walk to raise awareness and funding for the fight
against pulmonary hypertension (PH), a debilitating disease which
affects the hearts and lungs of children and adults. All Proceeds
from the race will benefit the Ewing Family Fund for Pulmonary
Hypertension Research at Stanford and the Pulmonary Hypertension
Association.

If you don't know what Mafia is, here is a description from Wikipedia:
Mafia  is a party game modeling a battle between an informed minority
and an uninformed majority.  During a basic game, players are divided
into two teams: 'Mafia members', who know each other; and
'townspeople', who know only the number of Mafia amongst them. The
goal of both teams is to eliminate each other.

Don't worry if you've never played it before, you'll learn it quickly.
Also, we'll provide some yummy snacks.
