1. Grad Night in San Francisco

Grad night in San Francisco
Sponsored by the GSC (Grad Student Council) and GSPB (Grad Student
Programming Board)
Buses leave the GCC at 7:30 pm and 9:00 pm
Cost: $5 round trip into San Francisco

Hop on a bus into San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood and enjoy
the restaurants, cafes and nightlife that this "Top Ten Neighborhood
in the USA" has to offer.

Hang out at the fun bars near Columbus, get dinner in
the Italian North Beach neighborhood or China Town, sip a cappucino at
one of the many outdoor cafes, or check out the other nightlife.

Buses will return from San Francisco at 12:30 am and 2:00 am (or when
bars close).  You won't find a more convenient or cheap way into San
Francisco, so take advantage of this opportunity to check out the city!

2. Sending Golden Rays of Love into the Ether

Join us on the lawn, as we bring cruelty-free snacks and big towels
for communal use, and sit around together thinking positive thoughts
and sharing in the glow of our communal happiness.  We will meditate,
get a little tan, fall asleep in the sun, talk and be mellow, and have
a good time recentering ourselves after a couple hectic weeks of
school.  Everyone is welcome! Bring the love, share the sunlight.

3. Homecoming Tailgate with Rains!

After defeating #1 USC last week, Stanford football looks to take on
the TCU Horned Frogs for our Homecoming Game on October 13th.  Come
join other Rains residents for a pre-game tailgate at Stanford
Stadium, beginning at 10:00 AM and lasting until 2:00 PM, when the
game begins.  We will supply the food and beverages, so make sure to
stop by even if you don't plan on going to the game.  We will try to
be set up in Lot #2 (El Camino Grove), between gates 12 and 13, in the
grove of trees opposite the restrooms.  If we cannot stake this spot,
we'll be sure to contact you.  CAs will also be organizing groups to
walk from Willis to the tailgate at both 11:00 AM and 12:00 AM, if you
wish to wait until then.  If you want to walk there, and you're still
not sure where to go, just meet near gate 12 and one of the CA's will
be stopping by frequently to look for residents.  Hope you can make it!

Lastly, some of the CAs will be camping out in the lot on Friday night
to ensure a good tailgating location, so if anyone would care to join
us, please come by.  There probably won't be too many people there on
Friday, so you'll be sure to see us.

Wage war with your neighbors this sunday at Santa Clara Paintball in
San Jose. We will get our own field for 3 hours from 1pm to 4pm, so we
should leave here by noon at the latest to allow time for gearing up
when we get there. 
Price is $35, or even $30 if we get enough people. Price includes
admission, marker rental, hopper rental, tank rental, mask rental,
unlimited High Pressure fills and 500 rounds of paintballs.

Once I have a headcount I will need checks from you to reserve your spot.

5. Mafia - Release your inner mobster

If you don't know what Mafia is, here is a description from Wikipedia:
Mafia  is a party game modeling a battle between an informed minority
and an uninformed majority.  During a basic game, players are divided
into two teams: 'Mafia members', who know each other; and
'townspeople', who know only the number of Mafia amongst them. The
goal of both teams is to eliminate each other.

Don't worry if you've never played it before, you'll learn it quickly.
Also, we'll provide some yummy snacks.

6. Movie night: Surf's Up

In this animated mockumentary, film crews go behind the scenes at the
Penguin World Surfing Championship to provide a close-up look at the
inventors of surfing. Yes, penguins were the first species to hang 10
-- or at least that's what this film purports.

7. Great America Amusement Park

Rains is going to Great America, an amusement park only 20 minutes
south of Stanford in Santa Clara!  Hop on roller coasters and rides
like Delirium, Demon, Invertigo, Top Gun and the all new Survivor the
Ride! They close October 28th for the winter, so this is our last
chance to go. The park opens at 10AM. Return time will depend on
drivers' preference.

Tickets will be $21 for Rains residents, $31 for non-Rains guests. 
This is a great rate, as tickets are usually $51.95!  

RSVP to Alexia (lea210@stanford.edu) your name, your friends' names
and whether you are able to drive. There are 20 spots available. In
the event that no one volunteers to drive, I may give drivers
priority.  Once I confirm your request, I will collect your payment
and give you instructions on when and where to meet on Saturday,
October 20th.

8. Aids Walk Silicon Valley & Lunch

All Rains residents and guests are welcome to join the Stanford Grad
Students team as we raise money for services that go to local
residents with AIDS.  We will carpool to the event for those who want
to walk, and anyone can sponsor a Rains walker or donate!  It's going
to be a really fun walk and a great way to serve the community!
 
We will go out to lunch after, so that will be sweet!!

9. San Jose Sharks take on the L.A. Kings!!

Come out on Friday, November 2nd and watch the San Jose Sharks take on
their Pacific Division rivals - the L.A. Kings. We only have 25
tickets to the game, so email Alice (atryan@stanford.edu) to reserve
your spot.   When you reply, be sure to indicate whether you can drive
and how many others you can take with you.  I will have to give
priority to drivers if not enough people volunteer.  The cost per
ticket is $18 for Rains residents, $25 for non-Rains residents (the
tickets have a face value of $32).

10. 7th Annual Race Against Pulmonary Hypertension  5k Run and Walk

What: 7th Annual Race Against Pulmonary Hypertension  
When: Sunday, November 4, 2007 with race starting at 9 am (meet in 
front of the fountain by the Rains office at 8:15 am to walk over to 
the race)
Where: Stanford Stadium

We've done this race the past few years, and it's been a lot of fun. 
If you're interested, email Jenny (jerhart@stanford.edu) by no later 
than Monday October 15th.

Include in the email your name, birthday, gender, age, email, phone
number, address, and t-shirt size.

Registration cost to you will be $15 (with Rains subsidy) , and 
includes race registration, a long-sleeve t-shirt, and post-race 
refreshments.

This is a race for a great cause. For more information about the 
race, see the information and website below:

A 5k fun run/walk to raise awareness and funding for the fight 
against pulmonary hypertension (PH), a debilitating disease which 
affects the hearts and lungs of children and adults. All Proceeds 
from the race will benefit the Ewing Family Fund for Pulmonary 
Hypertension Research at Stanford and the Pulmonary Hypertension 
Association.
