Recap

The universe grows darker... Jesse mysteriously succumbs to a nagging wrist ailment (he suggested that it might be diving-related, but anyone who has gone swimming knows how soft and supportive water is. Jesse still seems convinced that the high platform might have something to do with it. We remain skeptical--we'd check it out, except we get afraid going up that high). Harvir played one game, but made an early departure to go see some CGI movie that's come out recently. Can't remember the name, offhand. Something about forces of light and dark battling for supremacy, which sounded a lot like intercollegiate racquetball to me.

David and Matt played several games out, with Jack watching the first one and crying to himself at the questionable shot selection: you guys are pinching when you shouldn't pinch; hitting passing shots to where the other guys is; and Matt, Matt, Matt... you need to hit your pinches harder. Right now they are floating in and giving Dave an easy shot to cover. (And Matt had been thinking his big problem was poor concentration/footwork that day--overruning the ball so that he was jammed and skipping the resulting shot.) It wasn't all miserable, though. David's backhand continued to recover some pop and he was applying good pressure to Matt in the first two games, and Matt was having trouble recovering between points. The third game was a miserable affair in which Matt discovered his groove with a lob serve to David's forehand that gave him a world of difficulties. Matt was also able to rely upon a stronger ceiling game--giving him a bit more recovery, and allowing him to take advantage of any short or long ceiling balls, while David was not shooting as many of the errors that Matt made.

Clearly lots of work to be done over the summer to get ready for next year! For those in the area, we'll be playing over the summer. For those without access to courts: try some cross-training (aerobic + core strength training). Also, consider ordering a DVD of professional racquetball to watch how the really good players play. Send email to racquetball@lists.stanford.edu if you want suggestions on training.

Next week: we look forward to seeing healthy Jesse and Aaron on the courts again!
