The mission of Student Pugwash USA is to promote the socially responsible application of science and technology in the 21st century. As a student organization, Student Pugwash USA encourages young people to examine the ethical, social, and global implications of science and technology and to make these concerns a guiding focus of their academic and professional endeavors.

Student Pugwash USA was founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1983. We are modeled after the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize recipients, the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. With the advent of the hydrogen bomb as a humbling and frightening backdrop, Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell co-authored a manifesto urging scientists to consider the social, moral, and ethical implications of weapons of mass destruction. This manifesto led to the first Pugwash Conference, held in Pugwash, Nova Scotia in 1957. The Pugwash spirit has always implied the need for scientists to broadly consider the ethical implications of their work, beyond the challenges raised by nuclear weapons. At Student Pugwash USA, we draw upon the Pugwash tradition as we seek to prepare young people to emet and to predict emerging challenges posed by science and technology. Student Pugwash USA is one of over 20 national Student and Young Pugwash groups around the world.
