Persian Student Association at Stanford and The Stanford Film Society welcome renowned Iranian film director, Abbas Kiarostami, to Stanford University for an open discussion with the Stanford community about his work and Iranian cinema in general. "During 30 years of filmmaking, writer-director-producer-editor Abbas Kiarostami has crafted his own unique brand of cinematic humanism, capturing along the way almost every honor world cinema has to offer, including the Golden Palm at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for Taste of Cherry", says Alissa Simon in, Formalist Humanist, an article for the San Francisco Intl. Film Festival On April 30th 2000, the San Francisco International Film Festival (SFIFF) will present Kiarostami with the Akira Kurosawa Lifetime Achievement Award in directing . The event at Annenberg Auditorium is intended to be an interactive open discussion between Kiarostami and the Stanford community. A panel of three experts in Iranian film will lead the discussion after the screening of a short montage of Kiarostami's works by Jamsheed Akrami, called Kiarostami 101. Kiarostami's film, Traveller, will be shown at the Park Theater in Menlo Park one day prior to this event on May 3rd at 7PM. He will be present after the film to answer questions. This showing is part of SFIFF's retrospective of Kiarostami's works at this year's festival.
