Using the PRL
The PRL is available to registered students, staff or faculty members.
There are easy steps to getting access to the shops:
1. Register
on the WWW as a first-time user. As a new user, you will be asked to
sign up for a safety class after you register.
3. Attend said safety class.
4. Stop by the machine shop and pay your fees
Once you have a license, you can come in and use
the shop anytime it's open--just check the
Shop schedule.
You can also reserve machines ahead of time
through our web-based reservation system,
Webshop. A reservation entitles
you to use the machine for a four-hour shop session
provided that you show up to claim it during the
first 10 minutes of that session.
Registering:
The PRL staff keeps a WWW-based database of user
information, such as name, ID#, and emergency
contacts, in the unlikely event of an accident. In
order to use the shop, the PRL staff requires that
you register
with our database.

Signing up for safety class:
Sign-up for safety class is done after you register
with our on-line database. You should be routed automatically to
available safety classes after registering. Classes are given more often
at the beginning of the quarter, when demand by new users is high. Class
times are generally posted around 3PM Friday for the following week.

Safety Class:
Safety class is designed to give users a general
idea of the types of hazards one might encounter in
the shop and inform them of the proper procedures
in the unlikely event of an accident. The class
lasts about one hour and twenty minutes. Attendance
is strictly limited to ten students. If you already
have ANSI standard Z87.1-compliant safety glasses,
please bring them; if not, glasses will be
available for loan or purchase. Get a look at the

Fees:
There are two types of shop license:
The "day pass" costs $20 and expires at midnight on the day it was purchased.
Day passes are available from shop TA's whenever they are on duty.
Quarterly licenses allow access for the duration of the academic quarter.
They can be purchased from Craig Milroy in the PRL office, generally
between 9AM and 5PM, Monday through Friday, or any PRL TA. The fees
this year are:
One quarter - $120, two quarters - $220, three quarters - $300. The
cost of one day pass can be applied to the price of a quarterly
license.
