The Machine Shop + Computer Loft

The machine shop is the core of the Product Realization Lab. During the Fall and Winter quarters, this area of the shop is busy with students completing design projects. At the end of these two quarters the shop is meticulously cleaned and students will present their work to peers and teachers in the same room where they strived to bring their design to fruition. Only metal and plastic is allowed in the machine shop. The main equipment is listed below.

Below you will find a fairly comprehensive list of tools available in the Machine Shop. Many of them are linked to detailed "how to use" documents. In addition, there is information on machining various types of materials.

    The Computer Loft :

The computer loft has eight DELL computers. As part of the shop facilities, the computer loft is used to support design and computer-aided machining projects. Software includes Solid Edge CAD, Virtual Gibbs CAM, and Microsoft Office suite. To use the computer facilities, you must have a shop license and a computer account. You can get an account from Craig Milroy.

For information about using the computing resources available, please consult the software manuals available in the loft, and the on-line documentation provided by the software.

Below is information about the software, and its use in the PRL. Special thanks to the Smart Product Design Lab for the Solid Edge assembly tutorial!
