Gems Galore has a moderate selection of jewelry-making
supplies. They're biggest advantage is that they're close. They have a
good selection of rocks and minerals and you can get just about
everything you need for casting here as well. It's a bit pricey, and feels a little like a craft store, but good
for last minute purchases. They also sell investment casting wax (green, purple, and blue).
Directions: Head south on El Camino Real, veer off onto El Monte. It's
on the right hand side in a small strip mall.

Comments: Alan Steel, AKA Alan Steels, has a really great selection of
base metals and stuff (salvage) made from base metals. This includes
sheet, tubing, extrusions, rod, angle, and pallet material in aluminum,
brass, steel, stainless steel and some plastics. You can also find giant
gears, motors, fans, and all sorts of other random stuff. They charge to
cut. This is a really great place to wander around just to get your
creative juices flowing. They give deals to the fairer sex and on stuff
they don't understand. Otherwise it's pretty pricey.

These guys kind of screwed us (the Fall 2006 ME203 class). Somehow the guy we got quotes/delivery time from got fired a day or two later. The prices went up and so did the lead times -- many of us could not get our pieces anodized on time because of this. When asked for a concrete deadline they actually said "we will try to get it done by Monday unless another client of greater importance to us needs something." I believe we should try to find a different place next time. At the very least get a written quote. -TB
